Only 2 weeks left to unlock primary school kids’ mathematical potential. The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) is challenging all primary school teachers and parents to enter their young ones in the South African Mathematics Challenge (SAMC). The closing date for entries is the 15th of April 2016.

The SAMC is open for grades 4-7 learners and is organised by the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) in collaboration with the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA). The entry fee is R10 per learner in South Africa which is payable on entering for the First Round. Quantile 1 and 2 schools can enter free of charge. Last year more than 104 000 Learners from 486 schools participated in the annual competition. The first round of the Challenge will be written the week of the 9th till the 13th of May and those who qualify for the final round will write on the 27th of July.

Professor Johann Engelbrecht, Executive Director at the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) encourages teachers and parents to enter their learners for the Challenge. “The Challenge is not a scholastic test, but it tests conceptual knowledge, the application of knowledge in new situations, problem solving skills and general mathematical thinking,” explained Professor Engelbrecht. He expressed his appreciation to many schools that organise their own mathematics competitions and encourages more schools to do likewise. “The SAMC, however, is the prestige national challenge and ALL primary schools should participate in this event, even if they have their own competitions.”

It aims to popularise mathematics by developing and disseminating materials that may contribute to meaningful mathematical activity in classrooms. It also supports the new curriculum and helps South Africans to become empowered independent critical and creative thinkers. The Best Performing School (last year it was Sweet Valley Primary school in Cape Town) is presented with an award at the SAMF annual award function to be held later this year. Other awards include Best New Performing School, Best Participating School and Best Performing per Quantile schools.
