MO BROS AND SISTAS WEAR THEIR TASH ON THEIR SLEEVES FOR MOVEMBER South African non-profit social enterprise Relate Bracelets is throwing its support behind South Africa’s Movember campaign again – with Mo Bro and Mo Sista bracelets now sold in selected Woolworths stores nationwide. This year’s Movember Relate Bracelets have a new and exciting look. They are the first to steer away from the organisation’s trademark hand-beaded bracelets. Instead, Relate has created Mo Bro adjustable cord and Mo Sista adjustable thread bracelets. Both feature Relate’s trademark “R” bead – the sign of their transparency and accountability. Movember, the “hairiest month of the year”, is now in its 13th year and is celebrated in 21 countries, including South Africa. Each year throughout November, men around the world grow moustaches to raise funds and awareness around the often-ignored issues of men’s physical and mental health. To raise funds, you can Grow a Mo, host and attend an event, purchase a Movember Relate Bracelet in support, or even take the MOVE challenge to be physically active for 20-30 minutes per day. Mo Bros are encouraged to start Movember clean-shaven and to grow and groom a moustache for the entire month. Mo Sistas can also support by organising a fundraising event or taking the MOVE challenge. Anyone can sign up at Movember.com and, of course, wear a Relate Bracelet. Movember’s year-round awareness and education programmes encourage men to become more aware of their health, talk more with their friends, and be more physically active -improving their health and well-being. The facts: In South Africa, there are 23 suicides daily, with over 200 attempts per day. Globally, 510,000 men commit suicide each year. That’s one every minute. On average five South African men will die from prostate cancer every day and one in 29 men has a risk of testicular cancer. Therefore, we, as South Africans, need to get behind men’s health. “Prostate and testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity are some of the biggest health issues facing men today,” says Garron Gsell, chief executive and founder of the Men’s Foundation, which drives Movember in South Africa. “We want men to live happier, healthier, longer lives. Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends are facing this health crisis and it’s not being talked about. We can’t afford to stay silent. We need to talk about it. We need to act. We want men to talk when things get tough.” With funds raised, Movember is funding game-changing programmes, while positively challenging the way in which men’s health issues are researched and addressed. In South Africa over the past seven years, more than 120 000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas have supported the campaign, raising R5.6 million locally toward these programmes. Relate Bracelets is a 100% not-for-profit social enterprise that makes and sells handmade bracelets in support of more than 90 worthy local causes. In six years, Relate Bracelets has raised more than R38 Million from the sale of over 2.4 million bracelets in support of these causes. Woolworths has long been a supporter of Relate Bracelets, as part of their Good Business Journey, having raised more than R4.5 million from bracelets sold in support of conservation, social upliftment, and men’s and women’s health including their annual Relate Bracelet in support of Movember. “Through collaborations with prominent retailers, we raise more funds for causes and significantly increase the impact we make in South Africa – simply from the sale of bracelets at till points,” says CEO of Relate Bracelets Neil Robinson.
