Change is all around us. Change is inevitable.

In the words of Nelson Mandela, “It only seems impossible until it is done”

Nelson Mandela was an extraordinary human being who lived an extraordinary life, a life full of purpose. The world recognises him as one of the greatest men who ever lived. It is fair to say, his memory will live on for many years to come because of the impact he made to the world in his lifetime.

For many South Africans during the apartheid era, he was a symbol of hope. He represented a brighter tomorrow.

Not only that, he became an integral tool of reconciliation between those who were the oppressed and those who were the oppressors.

We have all read books and watched movies about the life of this great icon, Nelson Mandela – and we can all agree that he was a world’s hero.

This article aims to look deep into what made Nelson Mandela an icon and a hero: What was his mind-set? What values did he live by?

  • Leadership: Nelson Mandela taught us invaluable lessons on leadership.

Leadership isn’t about the title they give you in your organisation. It is an inherent quality that you possess, it is something that is at the core of your being. What many are yet to learn is that leadership comes with sacrifices…sacrifices which could ultimately mean a loss of one’s life for the cause in which they are leading.

  • Courage: In a world where there are so many things that can discourage us, one being fear – Nelson Mandela showed us how to be courageous even under daunting circumstances: do not give in. Stand tall and bold.

  • Compassion: If in all that we do there is no love, all that we do is all in vain. Love encompasses all our efforts. Love shares, love gives and love forgives. Always show compassion – not only in words but by doing.

As we celebrate this iconic world’s hero, let’s remember the great values he lived by. When you look at South Africa today you will understand that all his efforts were but a seed. For there is so much yet to be done. Each and everyone of us has an opportunity to be their own version of a Mandela in our generation.

How do you begin to do it? Set your life on a cause.

Be the change you want to see in your generation.

That is the reason for the Changemakers Hub. A community of extraordinary leaders who have set their lives on making a difference in the world by changing the lives of the people in their spheres of contact.
