PinkDrive is South Africa’s most indispensable breast cancer Non-Profit Company (NPC), powering mobile Women’s Health Mammography and Gynaecology Units to remote areas throughout the country. Providing access to free women’s health services to all medically uninsured women in rural areas, the PinkDrive initiative offers free mammograms, pap smears, clinical examinations and education pertaining to women’s health such as how to do breast self-examinations. The pioneer of this initiative is Noelene Kotschan, founder and CEO of the PinkDrive and More Balls Than Most (MBTM), the brother charity of PinkDrive.

Fueled by an urge to make a difference around cancer awareness in general Kotschan’s marketing & events background played an integral part in disrupting the status quo. Her inaugural initiative, the CANSA “shavathon”, is probably the most supported awareness program in the country today but started out as her brainchild in 2004. However, after a four years she shifted her focus to breast cancer, specifically aimed at reaching women in underprivileged communities that don’t have access to this type of healthcare, specifically preventative measures and testing facilities.

Equipped with her only personal savings and a vision, Noelene took the first PinkDrive truck on the road in 2009, delivering breast cancer screening to women at hospitals, clinics and community health centres in urban areas across the country. Noelene knew what it would take to ensure that the PinkDrive succeeded and was unperturbed; she knew she could do it.

Today PinkDrive is one of SAs most well-known and impactful NGOs. It employs over 35 staff has 3 Mobile Mammography units, 1 Educational Unit and 5 educational cars and has been able to reach over 240 000 individuals with the help of invaluable sponsors.

Some of Noelene’s defining moments include launching the world’s first mobile radiology and gynaecology women’s health unit in 2014. Noelene’s continual efforts to assist women across South Africa has been regularly recognised, but most recently she has been named the Most Influential Woman in Business and Government in the “Welfare and Civil Society Organisation” category, by CEO magazine, one of many accolades awarded to this respected and much loved philanthropist.

Each day poses new challenges and possibilities, says Noelene. Her hands-on-approach sees her attending almost every meeting, event and phone call with cancer fighters and survivors, but she tries to lead a balanced life. As not only a mother but also a grandmother, Noelene takes everything in her stride, as the cool, calm and collected woman she is.

Noelene’s ultimate satisfaction is knowing that the PinkDrive is making a difference in people’s lives, “ I sleep soundly at night knowing that the PinkDrive is helping someone, somewhere in South Africa”, she says.

Noelene’s passion and dedication will see the PinkDrive continue to grow in strength, leaving a lasting impression and a legacy for years to come.
