LACE UP FOR CANCER ACHIEVES 50% GROWTH The Lace Up for Cancer fun run on the 4th of February, World Cancer Day, will double its numbers from 600 to 1200 participants and establish itself as a popular charitable race. Returning to Seapoint Promenade provides a great platform for runners who will dress according to the theme – How crazy can you be for Cancer? The event will create a space for the six cancer-fighting charities (CANSA, CHOC, HPCA, Love Your Nuts, People Living With Cancer and Sunflower Fund) and families who have been affected by the disease to connect and share their respective stories. This will aid in raising necessary funds and awareness for each organisation. Last year saw supporters wearing printed t-shirts dedicated to their loved ones tackling the race to inspire others and bring light to the situation many face while ill. Genevieve Haupt, a researcher in higher education at the University of Cape Town, took part in 2015 wearing a bright purple cape emblazoned with ‘1 year remission’ on the back. “I was a very safe person before I was diagnosed. I wasn’t keen on trying new things or taking risks. This has changed since I was diagnosed with Cancer,” Haupt said. “I wanted to celebrate life and the fact that I made it through all of it.” This day is dedicated to educating people on the disease and garnering support in the fight against cancer. According to the World Cancer Day organisation 8.2 million people die from cancer worldwide every year, out of which 4 million people die prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years). It’s predicted that by 2030 cancer cases may increase to 75% globally and in South Africa alone that figure could rise to 78%. Ticket holders have the choice of a leisurely 5km or a pacier 10km run and for supporters entertainment will include a live DJ, food trucks selling family-friendly treats and a slew of activities. The race starts at 18h30 and ticket prices are R100 per ticket for single entries and R300 for groups of four people, which includes the colourful laces and runner’s pack.
