Metropolitan Health and Stellenbosch University believe in the power of partnerships. Leaders in their respective sectors, they are joining forces to nurture the talent and leadership essential for transforming South African healthcare.


Successfully implementing National Health Insurance (NHI) in South Africa requires that the current health system is significantly strengthened. A key aspect of this strengthening is producing health professionals and leaders with the knowledge and skills to deal with the challenges of an evolving health system that aspires to be more effective in meeting the health needs of all South Africans, irrespective of their socio-economic status.


Internationally recognised for academic excellence, Stellenbosch University (SU) is one of the leading research-driven Higher Education Institutions on the African continent. The SU’s Centre for Health Systems and Services Research and Development (CHSSRD) is a multidisciplinary entity providing a shared service and academic platform for health systems and services research and development within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS).


A leader in South African healthcare, Metropolitan Health is partnering with the SU’s CHSSRD in order to offer an innovative new course on the management of health systems and institutions. The new Postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Management is for managers in healthcare organisations such as private and public sector hospitals, clinicians and health professionals managing healthcare practices, consultants and programme managers.


This course is one of only three dedicated leadership and management postgraduate courses for health managers in South Africa. Healthcare poses unique challenges to the manager, particularly in areas such as ethics and viewing health as a public good rather than a commodity. As NHI is phased in, the ability of managers in the public and private sectors to effectively and efficiently manage finances, human resources and service delivery patterns within and between sectors will become increasingly important.


Metropolitan Health has made a generous financial contribution to this innovative collaboration. Furthermore, in developing and delivering the course and potential future joint ventures, SU’s CHSSRD and Metropolitan Health will share expertise, data and networks to support health leadership development and health systems strengthening


SU will also promote research projects at masters and doctoral level that will add value to the South African healthcare industry. This sharing of expert resources and networks will strengthen each partner’s contribution to building the foundations for a more inclusive health system.


In attendance at the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement, which will provide a framework for this innovative collaboration, were:

By helping to create the healthcare leaders of tomorrow, this potent partnership between Metropolitan Health and the University of Stellenbosch will help pave the way for the long journey ahead towards universal health coverage.
