A new year means a new beginning. May we all learn from our past selves.

“Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.” – Oprah Winfrey

Dear future me,

I’m writing to you on the last day of the last month of last year. The clock is ticking by, seconds pushing me towards a new beginning, a new year. I want you to know a couple of things as you start living out the beauty of a fresh chapter in our story. I want you to always remember them when you open your eyes to the days of 2016.

  • Darkness will always be present. It’s natural. Hatred will always be present. It’s unnatural. How we see the world become a reflection of who we are. I am the universe and the universe is me.
  • There is not a single being in this world who knows me better than I know myself. Some may come close but when you’re in between the fence about something and there are people tugging on one side and people pulling on the other, you listen to yourself.
  • You are your biggest supporter and also your biggest competition. It’s a fact of life. So don’t shy away from the forces that try to belittle you. Face them as if you were facing yourself. You know you can do it. You’re worth it, you know. I believe in us.
  • Magic is real. It settles over us in a quiet manner. It lives in smiles, hugs, and laughter so deep it echoes through the sparkling night. On unpleasant days, it pushes us forward. It is within us, never forget.
  • On the days you feel lonely, those up-and-down days, try to listen to the beat of your heart. Close your eyes and feel the blood rushing through your veins. Your whole body is alive and working for you—millions of cells with millions of jobs that make up you. Try to catch one of the rapid thoughts flitting across your mind and hold it close because everything you create is wonderful.
  • Every day will be different. In the framework of choices and human power, you are a master. You decide how your day will turn out, not the weather, or the surprise call from work. Take a deep breath and smile. Everything happens for a reason.
  • Life is a journey. It doesn’t need to be figured out on the spot. Be patient, be free. It’s true about puzzle pieces falling into place. They always will.
  • The people meant to stay in your life will stay no matter what. Some will go, some will come back. But there are those who will keep their fingers interlocked with yours, those who will be there in the most chaotic moments—appreciate them. Love them and let them love you.
  • It’s okay to be scared, to worry. It’s okay to cry. Crying is release. Find a corner, find a bed or a sofa or a chair or a loved one. Let it all out because you will feel lighter when the storm is over.
  • There are lessons hidden in every nook and corner on the streets of this world. You are meant to discover them, to experience the moments that lead up to them. It’s how the pages turn, how the seasons change, how the months fly by. It’s how you’re going to grow.

You are wonderful. You are precious. You are loved.

Happy New Years!
