What better way to celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday, June 16, than at Dolci Café, one of Johannesburg’s destination restaurants when it comes to authentic Italian cuisine?
 

This popular neighbourhood eatery has an impressive pedigree – headed up by Chef Jackie Righi-Boyd, with assistance from her mother Luciana Righi (previously of Assaggi, Tre Nonni and Amarcord), Righi-Boyd’s husband actor Clayton Boyd as well as their partner Zoran Mijailovic.

 
Firmly established as one of the city’s best-loved trattorias, the restaurant is offering a sumptuous Father’s Day set luncheon menu. The most difficult thing will be deciding what to order.
 

STARTERS
 
Vitello Tonnato Thinly sliced veal served with a homemade tuna sauce
or
Melanzane Alla Parmigiana Brinjals layered with Parmesan cheese in a Napolitana sauce
or
Pasta E Fagiolo Con Maltagliati – Bean soup with Maltagliati Pasta
or
Spicy Chicken Livers Seasoned chicken livers grilled then finished off in a spicy tomato sauce and served with bruschetta
 
MAINS
 
Osso Bucco – Slow cooked beef shin in a tomato gravy and served over homemade tagliatelle pasta or mash potato

Panzerotti Di Pollo Cacciatora – Pasta Parcels filled with chicken prepared and served in a tomato and Italian herb Sauce

Calamari Ripieni Calamari tubes stuffed with tuna, bread crumbs, garlic, capers and parsley

Cannelloni – Thin pasta tubes filled with ricotta cheese and spinach in a Napolitana sauce
 
DESSERT

Clayton reveals some of the hidden gems and his favourites on the Dolci Café wine menu:

 
“We have some wonderful wines that are not widely known. I personally enjoy red wines that aren’t too heavy or high in alcohol; the Antica Vigna Valpolicella is a favourite of mine. Imported from Italy and only R270 on the menu it is one of the best quality versus price wines on our list. We have wonderful Italian bubbly on tap in the restaurant. This is a light easy drinking, lower alcohol, sparkling wine in the prosecco style.”
