Winter is still here. South Africans across the country are feeling the chill and finding ways to keep warm. But winter doesn’t have to mean chilly mornings and afternoon huddled indoors, especially with the school holidays coming up.

According to Discovery’s Healthy Kids South Africa Report Card for 2014, at least half of South African children are not active enough (less than an hour a day) and less than half of urban kids take part in some kind of organised sport or recreational activity. The right outdoor activities for winter days coupled with a cup of MILO® is the first step to having a healthy, active winter.

Mpho Toolo, Nestlé Dairy Business Executive Manager says, “MILO® strongly believes that being active and enjoying sports is good for children even in winter, not only because it keeps them active but because it also assists in building life skills.”

South Africa offers a wealth of winter activities to keep your children active. Give your child a mug of MILO® at breakfast and allow them to explore nature and snap some pictures to share with friends when they head back to school.

Other fun winter hot activities include:

  • In Cape Town there is lots to do at Green Point Park; kids could fly a kite, ride their bike or kick around a ball in the open space garden
  • Take a walk or bike ride along one of the scenic routes in Cape Town or take advantage of the Table Mountain Kidz Season special and go up the cableway to explore Table Mountain. Acrobranch Park in Constantia is also a great place for the kids to release their energy and go swinging amongst the tree tops.
  • In Soweto, Thokoza Park offers a variety of things to do as it boasts a big-screen television in the middle of the park which could keep parents entertained while the kids play soccer
  • Johannesburg has a lot to offer in winter especially with the Discovery Soccer Park, PWC Bike Park and the recently launched Bounce trampoline park at Waterfall Lifestyle Centre; or pack a picnic, take a trip to Zoo Lake and soak up the winter sun.
  • Kwa-Zulu Natal offers plenty of winter activities with its perpetually balmy weather you could take a hike in Umhlanga, go biking at Giba Gorge or take the kids to uShaka Marine World for some exploring.
  • KZN is possibly the only city in South Africa where you would be able to still enjoy the beach in winter, so take advantage and take a stroll on the beach with the kids

Many working parents can’t afford to take time off during the winter holidays. There are various winter activities that can keep the children active throughout the day including playing outside with pets, taking a walk, or having a picnic on a sunny winter’s day. Toolo adds, “A balanced and active lifestyle is vital for children and MILO® with Activ-Go™ in the morning at breakfast time or in between activities, assists in giving your child the necessary energy they need to go the added extra.”

MILO®, the Number One Chocolate Malt beverage in the world, was first developed in Australia in the 1930’s, and has since re-launched globally. The drink which has always contained beneficial amounts of malted barley, vitamins and minerals, now has a unique combination of these ingredients called Activ-Go™, allowing optimum release of energy from the food that we eat throughout the day.
