ZONNEBLOEM’S BLANC DE BLANC THIS WINTER Who says you have to mothball white wines during winter? Certainly not John November, who makes Zonnebloem’s whites. “I think many people have this idea that white wines are only to be enjoyed in summer. Yes, whites are delicious on a hot summer’s day, but don’t rule them out for winter. “Take Zonnebloem’s Blanc de Blanc as an example. It’s fragrant, fresh, fruity and very versatile, for sipping with friends or teamed up with a meal, regardless of the weather.” A Chenin blanc-dominated blend that includes about 20% Sauvignon blanc, it has a beautiful green tint and vibrant tropical fruit flavours of guava, passion fruit and sweet melon. John likens it to an “explosion of tropical flavours on the tongue” and in winter, enjoys it with tomato-based pasta dishes, roast pork and roast chicken. “I love the contrast of sitting by the fireside with a glass of lightly chilled Blanc de Blanc in my hand.” The wine is available at liquor stores nationwide and retails for around R40 for a 750ml bottle.
