The idea to sponsor a professional cycling team and especially a mountain bike team was ostensibly created during a unique “brainstorming session” that involved the Ascendis executive team of COO Richard Crouse, CFO Robbie Taylor, CEO Dr Karsten Wellner, their mountain bikes and a few steep hills. Mountain biking is a rapidly growing sport in SA and is widely acknowledged as the “new golf” from a networking point of view. Dr Karsten Wellner comments: “Ascendis is a fast growing South African health and care company with leading health brands and increasing international business, so it made perfect sense that we align ourselves with a fast growing sport that embodies the essence of healthy living and the outdoor enjoyment of our scenic country.”

Ascendis engaged into a partnership agreement with Lange Sports owned and run by Malcolm Lange, a South African cycling icon. Malcolm signed up for Team Ascendis Health arguably the most promising and strongest female professional MTB riders currently in SA: Jennie Stenerhag, Sweden’s national marathon champion and South African marathon mountain-bike champion Robyn de Groot. Robyn was part of the National Women’s Road Cycling team for 6 years before she converted to mountain biking in 2013 and is currently South African marathon mountain-bike champion. Jennie is originally from Sweden but currently resides and trains in Stellenbosch. She started her cycling career as a road cyclist winning the Swedish National Championship and The Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay cycle Tour in 2009. In 2012 Jennie converted to mountain biking and is currently Swedish MTB marathon champion, for the second consecutive year, and placed 3rd in the ladies category at the Cape Epic in 2014.
