The ancient Vedic teachings tell us that we need to control our emotions, and to do this we can use various breathing techniques. If we can imagine an invisible umbilical cord attaching us to God or our Higher Self, then every time we breathe we are connecting to God. Try it by focusing on God and see what a wonderful sense of calm can be achieved, thereby controlling the emotions.

Breathing is so natural to us that we forget it is what keeps us alive. The ancient Vedas say ‘breath is the all’.  Our lungs take in life, and when the lungs are not working properly our ability to take in life is diminished.

This has widespread physical and psychological effects.  Many diseases related to the colon can be helped with proper breathing (TCM the lungs (breathing) and colon (elimination) are paired organs) – when we do abdominal breathing, the diaphragm massages the colon, keeping it healthy.

In Chinese Medicine the lungs are said to circulate chi, and when the chi is stagnant we become depressed. It is also said that there is a tendency, if the lungs are not healthy, to hold on to grief, sadness and the experiences related to such emotions. Our grandmothers made much sense when they recommended ‘taking a breath and counting to 10’!

In the Transformational Healing course we use the breath to set the tone for the session. Participants might have had to travel in traffic or maybe had a difficult situation at home, using the breath to relax and release tensions before a class brings about a more conducive atmosphere.

Breathing also stills the mind, which is why it is used in meditation. When we focus on the breath we are able to stop the mind from wandering. In today’s world we are given so much mental stimulation that we are often not able to switch it off! To control our mind we have to learn to focus and hold a point of stillness. This is not as easy as it may sound, but joining a class and practicing is one of the ways to do it.

Also in the course we use meditation as a way to explore the ‘theory’ through direct ‘inner’ experience, so the programme is designed to provide facilitated meditation. By allowing this time for silence, reflection, meditation and sharing in a supportive environment we hope to encourage the discovery of personal values and insights.

Meditation does not have to be done sitting in a yogi position with incense burning in the background. Having a relaxing bath, breathing and focusing the mind could be a form of meditation. When you’re relaxed, your breathing and heart rate slow down and your mind clears and becomes peaceful. Mindfulness is a way to achieve this level of relaxation using a variety of techniques including yoga meditation and simple relaxation exercises. Mindfulness quiets your chattering mind by teaching you how to observe your thoughts and feelings without seeing them as positive or negative. It trains you to use your breathing and an awareness of your body to focus on the present.  It is said that Meditation is listening to God while prayer is talking to God.
