Human behavioural expert, Dr John Demartini, offers simple tools to help you avoid stress at Christmas time.

“During the Christmas season our normal expectations can sometimes be elevated to the point of becoming a bit unrealistic,” Dr Demartini explains. “When our expectations of ourselves and others can’t be met, it can lead to negative emotions such as anger, resentment, fear or guilt.”

To avoid these stressful emotions Dr Demartini recommends four simple tips:

1. Have realistic expectations: Be realistic about what you can commit to regarding your time, energy and finances. Make sure you don’t over commit so you end up resenting Christmas and associate too much pain with it.

2. Stick to your budget: Avoid over-spending. The most memorable gifts are not always the most expensive. Find gifts that are thoughtful; ones that reflect the highest values of the recipient. If you don’t know what to get them I would have no problem calling them to ask them what they would like.

3. Set basic rules: If you have extended family coming over let them know what the rules are in advance. Setting basic rules can increase the fun factor at Christmas by reducing aggravation.

4. Be truthful: Tricky group gatherings are more fun when you are honest with yourself and others about what’s important to you (your values) and respect others differences and similarities. Be willing to say ‘no’ and ‘yes’ equally when either is most truthful.
