Great kitchen design comes down to striking a balance between aesthetics and functionality, and the best way to do that is to choose your appliances carefully. We speak to Jon Molyneaux from leading appliance manufacturer, Miele, who offers some tips on how to cut through the marketing noise to find out which appliances truly deliver.

Not only do kitchens manage an enormous number of key functions in the home – from cooking, to cleaning and food storage – but they still manage to look stylish while they are doing it. Choosing the correct kitchen appliances goes a long way to ensuring that you get the most out of your kitchen space. From ovens to hobs, fridges, and dishwashers – large appliances are the amongst the most expensive kitchen essentials to buy. Jon Molyneaux from leading appliance manufacturer, Miele, offers some need-to-know factors to consider when choosing your kitchen appliances:

Choose a respected brand

It’s important to do your research when shopping for appliances. Whether you’re looking for the best vacuum cleaners, cooking, laundry, refrigeration, or cleaning appliances – these household must-haves don’t come cheap, and so you want them to last for as long as possible. Of course, if you listen to the sales pitches, they all sound good. However, it is not always easy to decide which one offers the best bang for your buck.

A good rule of thumb, says Jon, is not to make your decision based solely on price, but to rather choose a well-respected brand that has earned a trusted reputation over time: “Miele for example, a German manufacturer of high-end appliances, is one of the oldest companies in the world – it was founded in 1899. This family-owned company generated 4.84-billion euros in revenue in its 2021 financial year, and it is considered one of the most reliable kitchen appliance brands in the world. In fact, amongst many other awards, it has repeatedly been voted ‘Most Trusted Brand’ by Readers Digest readers, and has been awarded first place for best customer service several times by the German Kundenmonitor (customer monitor). It was also voted ‘Best Brand Ever’ across all product branches, which reflects a high level of customer confidence.”

Choose after-sales service

Investing in a trusted brand, such as Miele for example, one that has cultivated a well-respected reputation over many years, ensures peace of mind that you are buying a high quality appliance from a company that will not only offer best-in-market quality, but it will also offer reliable after-sales service. Says Jon: “Miele is well renowned for its fast and efficient after-sales service operation. Even if you need personalised instructions on appliance use or troubleshooting – we are always available. We also offer useful home visits for cleaning and repairs of your Miele appliances.”

Choose quality & durability

Of course, quality is a really important aspect to consider, as not only do you want your appliances to perform, but you want them to be durable as well. However, we are not all engineers, so it is not always easy to differentiate a quality appliance from the rest. Jon notes that looking at the warrantees and guarantees that the appliance comes with is a great indicator of quality. He says that it is also a good idea to see how loyal the brand’s customers are.

Jon offers an example: “Miele’s brand promise is ‘Immer Besse’, which means that we do all that we can to be ‘Forever Better’ than our competitors and ‘Forever Better’ than we already are. Miele also designs, manufactures and tests its appliances to ensure that they last for 20 years’ use, which is a far superior offering to the 7-year lifespan that most other appliances offer. For our customers, our promise and testing offers them peace of mind that choosing Miele is a good decision, as they are ensured that they are buying best-in-market quality and durability.”

Choose technology & convenience

Be very weary of appliances that offer technological features that are just a gimmick, notes Jon: “So many appliances today offer technological features that at the point of sale, seem useful, but once purchased, they very rarely get used. Rather look for appliances that boast useful technological innovations focused around improving performance, usability, and offering the lowest possible energy and water consumption possible. Miele puts this first, a habit that has earned it numerous first places in leading product tests conducted around the world.”

He notes that your appliance also needs to be quick and easy to operate: “Appliances are supposed to make your life easier and save you time – you shouldn’t need an engineering degree to be able to operate it. Whether conventional rotary switch, discreet sensor or a high-resolution touch display like the one on your smartphone, Miele ensures that its appliances are super easy to operate. Add to this a multitude of convenient and reliable automatic programmes, and a great love of detail – Miele’s success is guaranteed.”

Choose design and aesthetics

Timeless design is an essential factor with regards to any kitchen appliance as they will be part of your kitchen space for a long time, so try and avoid obvious and fleeting design trends and stick to classic lines and elegance, advises Jon. He also notes that integrated appliances are no longer a trend, but rather a modern kitchen staple: “As kitchens get smaller, and the open-plan layouts gain momentum – integrated appliances, such as those from Miele, have become a must-have installation. They are space-saving, easy to clean, and they create a sleeker, more streamlined and attractive overall appearance.”

Miele has gone to great lengths to create a range of built-in appliances with consistency across all appliances with regards to design lines and colour options, so that they will suit the most versatile range of kitchen styles. Says Jon: “Versatility and longevity of style is what it’s about. Whatever the style of your kitchen: Miele is the perfect match.”
