MEN NEED TO TAKE ACTION AND TALK ABOUT THEIR HEALTH “You are worth getting the help you need”. This is the powerful message from AfroDaddy (Terence Mentor) who recently blogged about his mental health struggles on his YouTube channel and why he signed up as a Mo Bro for Movember. “I knew Movember was about prostate cancer prevention and men’s health, but it wasn’t until I had the worst day – and the best day – of my life that I really started thinking that it was about men’s mental health too.” In a remarkably candid way, AfroDaddy explains how, earlier this year, he woke up with an “intense, nagging feeling” that something was not right. Usually, all he needs are “the three big F’s – friends, family and food,” but at that time he started experiencing big self-worth issues. “I had this horrible feeling of not being worthy of success, or love, or friendship. I was overwhelmed, I wanted to run away. Everything was out of control and it culminated in the worst day of my life, which also turned out to be the best day of my life.” What made it so good? AfroDaddy admits that, unusually for him, he admitted his weakness, called a friend and “did the difficult, brave, wise thing that made all the difference. I asked for help”. “My friend put me in touch with a counselor who gave me some practical steps that really made a difference,” he said. “At my worst point I felt completely unworthy. I felt alone. I felt helpless,” he said. “But I know that no matter what you are feeling you are worthy of getting the help you need, and I am so glad I did.” All funds raised during the Movember campaign goes to awareness, education, research and survivor programmes linked to men’s health in South Africa. Movember is the leading global men’s health charity, funding over 1,200 projects in 21 countries worldwide – focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
