NETFLIX AND… THIS VALENTINE’S DAY It’s the ‘V’ word people love to hate, and it comes around once a year. The Christmas decorations have just been taken down and ‘poof!’ everything is red and white; teddies, heart-shaped chocolates, heart-shaped sweets, heart-shaped everything. Valentine’s Day is just one of those unofficial holidays that can go so wrong or so right. If you’re coupled up that’s one thing, but if you’re not, it’s kind of meh. Plus, if you are in a relationship, with this current economic climate it’s not like a five-course meal with bubbly and chocolate dipped strawberries is on the cards. “The best thing you can do, single or in a relationship, is Netflix and chill… literally,” says Jaco Joubert, high-end television brand SKYWORTH brand manager. “It sounds like a cliché, but all most people really want to do when they have a moment to themselves, or time with their significant other, is relax. Plus, with the S9A OLED TV, come Valentine’s Day, minimal effort is required. Being an AI TV, the S9A can be controlled solely by the user’s voice. The AI TV range supports both Google Assistant and other smart home devices such as Amazon Alexa, turning your TV into your home’s control centre.” So, you’ve got your state-of-the-art S9A OLED TV, which leans slightly back for viewing comfort, and has no backlight which means less damage to your eyes, now it’s time to decide what to watch. All you really need to do is make sure you’ve got enough snacks, a hot drink, or a tipple or two. Joubert provides some of the best movies and series to stream no matter who you’re Netflix and chilling with. ‘Heart-shaped Picks’ if you wish, because all relationships should be celebrated. A classic romance: Bridget Jones’s Diary – Love triangles are better when they involve Christmas jerseys. Definitely, Maybe – Ryan Reynolds explains his dating history to his 10-year-old daughter. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before – A fake relationship turned into a real one is conversation heart-level sweet. Set It Up – This Millennial rom-com is about two overworked assistants who attempt to lock their respective bosses in a romance… only to find real love with one another. Films about adults in their late-life prime: The Godfather – Your parents will appreciate watching a movie from their time. Get ready to hear about how they don’t make movies like they used to. Woman in Gold – Helen Mirren plays an elderly Jewish refugee on a mission to reclaim her family heirlooms stolen by the Nazis during WWII. One such piece was the famous Woman in Gold, a portrait of her aunt done by Gustav Klimt. The Hundred-Foot Journey – Another Helen Mirren film. This one is about the clash of culture between a Michelin-star restaurant and an Indian family eatery that ultimately leads to friendship. The Theory of Everything – This Stephen Hawking biopic is a deeply moving tale of love, loss, and mathematics. Watch these, then hug it out: Sing Street – This movie is about a bunch of high-schoolers in ’80s Dublin who start an Irish rock band. Ocean’s Eleven – Start planning your heists. Sydney White – A fun college movie based on Snow White. Edge of Seventeen – There’s sibling drama in this movie but also eventual sibling understanding. Third wheels: Hitch – Maybe your friends can pull a ‘hitch’ and find you your soulmate. The Truman Show – Jim Carrey’s character realises his entire life has been a live TV show. The Kissing Booth – Being the third wheel can be awkward, but at least your best friend’s secret boyfriend isn’t your brother. Dumplin’ – Who needs romance when you have Jennifer Aniston and Danielle Macdonald as pageant queens? Dog days: 101 Dalmatians – Just make sure to cover your pup’s eyes during the scary parts. Must Love Dogs – Your dog will support the messaging in his movie. Hotel for Dogs – Emma Roberts opens up a hotel for dogs. Moana – Moana doesn’t have a dog, she has a pig, but they’re best friends; so, it counts. Self-love: To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar – Three New York drag queens get stranded in the middle of America on a cross-country road trip. Good Will Hunting – Because no one will be around to see you cry over “It’s not your fault.” Cinema Paradiso – An Italian movie about love, cinema, and nostalgia. Velvet Buzzsaw – Monstrous art comes alive in this surreal Jake Gyllenhaal and Toni Collette flick. Girls night: Gossip Girl – Kick back and pretend you’re a Waldorf. Friends – Sure, you’ve binged the series a million times, but what’s one more round? The Princess Switch – You can decide which one of you is Vanessa Hudgens, the pauper, and which is the princess. Cry, and then laugh: Atonement – Expect this WWII-era romance to break you. Jane the Virgin – This show will lift you up. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – It’s a musical, it’s a comedy, it’s an important look at mental health. The Spectacular Now – Miles Teller’s slacker teen is funnier than any guy you went to high school with, but there’s plenty to cry over in this drama. Abs and alcohol: Charlie St. Cloud – Weepy enough to be accompanied by a tub of ice-cream, but sailing-enthusiast Zac Efron will certainly cheer you up. Drinking Buddies – The line between drinking buddies and romantic buddies gets blurry in this romantic drama. Riverdale – So much eye candy in this series. Obviously, you want the best possible picture quality when you’re Netflix and chilling. How embarrassing to have a not so clear picture when you’re trying to impress your Valentine. One of the S9A features that’s really created a buzz is the Chameleon AI PQ Extreme. Joubert explains it as, “A picture quality improvement technology based on the PQ chip. It uses AI technology to search, recognise and reconstruct image objects, therefore improving the picture quality precisely.” Chameleon AI PQ Extreme analyses object details based on AI algorithm and adjusts colour performance, particularly red, blue and green, in real time. This means that each pixel can perform at its most accurate and purest colour. Come to think of it, can everyday be Valentine’s?
