Exercise

Exercise should form a very big part of our lives today for many

reasons. Exercise fights the effects of stress, keeps us younger

for longer, helps with digesting our food, regulates blood pressure

and helps our bodies to release the feel-good hormone-endorphins.

I know it’s not easy to go to the gym, but incorporating little exercise

routines to everyday life will definitely get you going.

Quick and easy everyday exercises

  • Try taking the children for a walk in the afternoons to get everyone out of the house and away from the TV for a while.
  • Swimming with the kids is lots of fun, and a good form of exercise without anybody realizing it.
  • Put on one of your favourite CD’s and dance around the house. The kids will think you’re crazy, but believe me sooner or later they will join in!
  • Play “it” with your children by running away from the person who is “it”. This game builds endurance.
  • If you can, another great exercise is bicycle riding. But please make sure it is in safe areas and not on busy roads!

Healthy eating-healthy bodies

  • Remember to hydrate. In our hot climate it’s very easy to dehydrate, so drink lots of fluids, preferably water. Make sure the children get enough fluids by making ice lollies with 300ml water & 300ml orange juice. Mix the water and orange juice and pour into lolly moulds. Place in freezer until frozen.
  • Don’t exercise on an empty stomach. This only burns the reserves and places extra strain on the body, but don’t eat anything too heavy either. Have a small peanut butter sandwich or a piece of fruit. These will give you carbohydrates needed for energy.
  • Try and follow a low GI diet. This will ensure a slow release of energy during the day, and will make sure that everyone has enough energy for quick bursts of exercise whenever the opportunity arises.

Healthy eating and moderate exercise will benefit your whole family in the long run. It also fights heart disease, type 2 diabetes and promotes stronger muscles and bones. Make firm new years’ resolutions, and stick to them. Your family deserves nothing less!
