Our days are getting shorter, there is a crispness to the air around us and leaves on the trees are slowly bursting into a kaleidoscope of red, brown and gold.

If you haven’t already guessed, autumn has made its way to South African shores.

Now that autumn has made itself comfortable for the next few months, we’re limited to what we can do outdoors, especially here in the Mother City. But that shouldn’t mean that our indoor vibes are any less fun.

Here are 10 things to love about and enjoy during the autumn season:

1.    Piping hot waffles

Topped with fresh, seasonal fruit, whipped cream and lashings of warm, gooey Nutella, nothing beats a crispy, fresh-off-the-iron Belgian waffle when the seasons are a’changing.

Try Big Bay Waffle Company, The Creamery in Claremont and Salt River or Belgian Waffles, Beers and Burgers in Hermanus.

2.    Ride the Promenade

On a warm autumn evening, there’s no better way to appreciate Cape Town’s beautiful sunsets than with a stroll down the Sea Point Promenade. It’s even better enjoyed on bicycles with your special someone.

For those wanting an evening of fun, UpCycles offer an hourly bicycle rental rate of R60 for you to enjoy on the Promenade until the last few rays of sun slip below the horizon.

3.    Couch date

Lazy summer days gave us plenty of excuses to enjoy the outdoors and soak up the South African sun.

When it’s too chilly for a night out on the town, we now have the perfect excuse to stay in bed and binge-watch all our favourite series on DSTV, Netflix and YouTube. Will Harvey Spector get Mike out of trouble again in the next episode of Suits? Are Sheldon and Amy ready to take their relationship to the next level in The Big Bang Theory?

Hot chocolate, anyone? Don’t forget the mini marshmallows!

4.    Wine tasting

As the weather gets colder, our local wine farms only become more beautiful.

Despite the shift in seasons, wine farms still have their doors open for visitors. Popular venues like Meerlust Wine Estate, Delheim Wines and Eikendal Vineyards offer wine tasting and a selection of exceptional restaurants.

Warm the cockles of your heart with award-winning local wine this autumn. It won’t disappoint.

5.    A whole new wardrobe

One of the best reasons to love autumn…

Now that the seasons have changed, it’s time to haul out all your old favourites: scarves, sweaters and snuggly socks.

Need a wardrobe revamp? No problem! Kloof Street in Cape Town is the perfect place to shop for all your autumn essentials.

6.    The best sunsets

Autumn brings us the best looking sunsets that Mother Nature can offer, and there are plenty of local spots to enjoy them from.

The warm, cosy confines of Moyo at Eden on the Bay offer diners an exquisite ocean view with Table Mountain in the distance. Why not enjoy a selection of warm tapas from Café Caprice on the sandy shores of Camps Bay beach?

7.    Cosy reading

Autumn is a bookworm’s favourite time of year.

If you enjoy staying at home, armed with a warm cup of tea and your favourite read, autumn is the season for countless cosy nights of binge-reading. If reading isn’t your cup of tea, why not grab an adult colouring book or a jumbo crossword puzzle to keep you entertained?

8.    Home makeovers

If you’re into seasonal décor trends, you’re probably itching to get going on a new look for your home or apartment. Autumn is the perfect time to play around with palettes and textures that reflect the changing season outside.

Rose gold, copper, olive green and warm shades of red, brown and gold are bang on trend right now. Pop into your nearest Mr Price Home store and stock up on new throws, scatter cushions and bedspreads.

9.    Coffee and cake

Let’s face it: most of us enjoy coffee every day of the year. But there’s something about the autumn season that makes it the perfect seasonal drink.

Maybe it’s the heavenly aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans. Perhaps it’s the way the milk is frothed to fluffy perfection. Whatever it is, we’re all in! Sip on a cup of freshly ground coffee and indulge in a delicious slice of carrot cake at Cup & Cake. Their cream cheese icing is heaven on earth.

10. Hot baths

Nothing beats a warm soak in the tub after a long, stressful day.

Lengthy baths, with the help of your favourite aromatherapy candles, bubble bath and a glass of wine, will relax your muscles, improve your blood circulation and help you sleep better. We can’t think of a better way to spend a chilly autumn evening.

These are just a few things to look forward to this autumn season. Stay toasty!
