Right up with there with the dress, ones hair is very significant – especially for the ladies. With Matric Dance season coming up, it is time to start deciding on your dress and the “do”.

Well-known hair stylist, Donald Olive from Bespoke Hair, (situated on the ground floor at the Lion Match Office Park, 892 Umgeni Road in Durban), gives some valued recommendations on popular hair styles for you to rock at your Matric Dance this year.

Go great Gatsby with hair in a side path, pulled over one shoulder set in finger waves for that forever classic look.

Still all the rage, braids can be styled in many ways to reflect various styles from bohemian to beachy to Princess pretty.

Pancaked braids give a beachy look; add flowers and change it up to look boho-chic. Pancaked braids are french plaits or plain braids that are pulled out slightly to give it a flatter and fuller appearance.

Twisted floral crown is also a popular choice. The hair is divided and plaited into a section on each side. This is then twisted up to the top of the head and pinned down near the hair line to form a crown. Little flowers, pearl clips or diamante are then inserted into the loops, or a floral headband can be positioned so that both the braids and flowers are visible.

Pretty Braid Up-do – a favourite up style for many a young girl/lass/miss. This style is a popular choice for hair that can easily fall out of a curl or for someone who wants a style that is away from the face or want their hair to stay in place while dancing the night away. The braided updo consists of any type of braid that is swept into a bun or tucked under or pinned down.

Half up, half down curls – popular for those with long hair. This hair style gives off a beachy feel if messy and can also pass as a glamorous look if created with big curls. This style may also be bohemian if it includes a waterfall braid to separate the upper half from the lower half.

Updo with curls – this style goes one step further than standard curls. The hair is parted to the desired side and curled. It is then left to cool and then fingers are run through the hair. The curls are then either tied with a hair band and twisted, pinned, or pulled to create the desired updo. There are many more one can mention, but popular curly updo’s include a slightly raised front with curls gathered at the back using hair pins. Side styles are also created by curling the hair first and pulling low to one side and pinned.

Goddess bun – one of the most popular buns and is inspired by Beyonce’ Knowles. This braided bun is simple and elegant. Pull hair up to the top of the head and tie. Pull the hair over a hair sock and tuck before pinning in place. With a separate hair piece. Braid this and wrap around the bun and pin in place. This look is simply fabulous!
