Despite many claims to the contrary, the South African luxury market is going strong! Don’t believe us? Just take a look at the price tag of certain items, such as handbags. Some Traditional fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and Gucci are unsurprisingly always at the forefront with items that can easily reach five to even six figures. The big surprise, however, is that the most expensive, available handbag in South Africa at the moment is a pre-owned Hermès Birkin bag valued at R190,000 at Luxity.

Every woman has at least one: a handbag. They are both practical and is an extension of one’s style. The choice is not always easy as there is a myriad of shapes, materials and price tags from which to choose. They are obtainable for as little as a few hundred Rand or can cost as much as a car – depending mostly on the designer label.

“Generally speaking, customers in South Africa are very lucky as they are the only ones on the continent, with one or two exceptions, who have direct access to brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Prada,” explains Luke Calitz, owner of Luxity, South Africa’s largest source of pre-owned, authenticated luxury. “Due to the nature of our business, we are in the unique position to give customers access to all these sought-after brands, even ones who don’t have their own stores here!”

But what are the most expensive handbags currently available in South Africa? We put together a quick ranking:
1. Hermès Epsom Birkin 35 Bag for R 190,000 available at www.luxity.co.za
2. Louis Vuitton Ostrich Leather Alma PM for R 135,000 at Louis Vuitton boutiques
3. Louis Vuitton Limited Edition Artycapucines PM by Nicholas Hlobo for R 132,000 at Louis Vuitton boutiques
4. Gucci Limited Edition Elton John Dionysus Shoulder Bag for R 89,000 at Gucci boutiques
5. Louis Vuitton Quilted Lambskin Capucines PM for R 82,000 at Louis Vuitton boutiques

While most brands feature exotic materials like python, croc or ostrich leather, limited editions or collaborations with celebrities or artists, the Hermès Birkin usually makes the top of the list since its creation in 1984. No wonder that even a pre-owned Birkin still takes the crown of being the most expensive handbag in South Africa.
