For the fourth consecutive year, GrandWest opened its doors to school learners on 25 May 2017 as part of the annual Take a Girl Child to Work campaign. This year, 18 Grade 10 and 11 girls considering a career in the dynamic entertainment and hospitality industry were treated to a day at GrandWest where they enjoyed first hand insight into the inner workings of the complex.
The girls were from Heideveld Senior Secondary in Heideveld, Khulani High in Langa and Intsebenziswano High in Philippi. These three schools are beneficiaries of GrandWest’s Corporate Social Investment department’s Schools Renovation Programme and have received an upgraded Consumer Studies classroom in 2017. In 2016, four high schools received upgraded Consumer Studies classrooms courtesy of GrandWest. The Schools Renovation Programme in the Western Cape, part of a nationwide initiative by Sun International, is focused on upgrading hospitality classrooms at schools in underprivileged communities to properly equip learners to pursue further studies and a career in the hospitality sector.
“With the aim to inspire young girls to dream, believe and achieve, we treated the girls to an exciting day at the complex where they were offered guidance by hosting departments and were exposed to the working environment. The goal was to showcase the diverse career opportunities that exist in our exciting sector in various departments, from Information Technology, Finance, Marketing and Payroll to Human Resources, Food and Beverage, Entertainment, Finances and the Hotel,” says Heidi Edson, Group Socio Economic Development Manager at GrandWest.
Take a Girl Child to Work, now in its 15th year, encourages and motivates girls to think about future career possibilities by exposing them to diverse careers, work environments and positive role models.
