Western Cape Government’s Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport to give much-needed funding to unique sports academy
A unique high-performance sports academy is to be given a financial boost by the Western Cape Government when it hands over a cheque for R100 000 at an event in Stellenbosch past week. “It gives me great pleasure to officially hand over R100 000 to Endurocad, South African Endurance Academy. The vision of this esteemed academy is aligned to that of our department’s of a socially inclusive, creative, active and connected Western Cape”. Says Anroux Marais, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport.
The South African Endurance Academy, Endurocad, is the brainchild of South African athletic celebrities Elana Meyer and Janet Welham. Meyer won the silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in the 10 000-metres event, while Welham was a provincial athlete.
The first of its kind in Africa, Endurocad aims to become the most proficient high-performance endurance sports academy on the continent. Together with its partners, Stellenbosch University, the Stellenbosch Sports Academy and the Sports Science Institute of South Africa, this non-profit organisation offers a complete suite of services to support and manage world-class distance runners, providing the opportunity for South African endurance athletes to improve their times, make a living from their talent and build a brand and business for life after sport.
The much-needed funding will go towards Endurocad’s skills selection camp for 20 deserving athletes to be held in April. The five-day camp will include intensive training covering not only endurance coaching but also essential life skills. “We are delighted to have the support of Minister Anroux Marais and the Western Cape Government. We have made great progress over the last 2 years and saw how young athletes improved with support from Endurocad. We were fortunate to have the backing of corporate South Africa and believe that with the support of Government we will be able to help more talented runners achieve success in sport and live.” Says Elana Meyer.
