REEVA STEENKAMP REMEMBERED Natasha King hosts fun run in aid of the Reeva Steenkamp Foundation South African model and paralegal Reeva Steenkamp was shot and killed by her boyfriend, former Paralympian and Olympian Oscar Pistorius, seven years ago. In aid of the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation (RRSF), a non-profit organisation launched in 2015 by Steenkamp’s mother to raise awareness about the prevalence of abuse against women and children, Natasha King, (Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa 2019 Finalist) is hosting a fun run at the Castle of Good Hope on leap day, 29 February, 2020. Abuse of women and children is a significant issue in South Africa and the world. According to Bernadine Bachar, director of the Saartjie Baartman Center for Children in South Africa, one in five women has been exposed to physical abuse. The RRSF believes education is paramount to breaking the cycle of abuse. All proceeds from the event will go to the Steenkamp foundation towards the cause. Speaking ahead of the event, Natasha King said: “I believe that the root cause of gender-based violence is a lack of education and it is why I am so passionate about the work we do in schools.” She is convinced that much can be achieved through education. “We speak at schools against bullying and abuse,” says Natasha King. “We want to go far with this and we can only do so with the help of everyone, men and women. We know that there are amazing men out there and we want them to continue to stand by us on this matter by offering their support and solidarity, which we have been getting”. The fun run starts at 10:00hrs and ends at 12:00hrs. Participants are required to register ahead of the run at 9:30hrs. This is an event that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Those taking part are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and sneakers. “At the end of the day, this not only affects women, it affects men too and we are so much stronger together than divided,” King adds. A ticket for this event is R250 per adult and R150 per child (under 18).
