15 June is National Smile Power Day, a holiday observed to celebrate the power of the human smile, and the potential it has to do good in other people’s lives.

According to researchers at Walden University, smiling helps us feel better. *“Smiling increases mood-enhancing hormones while decreasing stress-enhancing hormones, including cortisol, and adrenaline. It also reduces overall blood pressure. And because you typically smile when you’re happy, the muscles used trigger your brain to produce more endorphins — the chemical that relieves pain and stress.”

But when you smile, it doesn’t just make you feel good, it can also make others feel good. Smiling is a major morale booster. Research has shown that smiling at someone can make them feel relaxed and relieve their stress. It also increases attractiveness, likeability, and trust between people!

With all these benefits, why aren’t we smiling more? Often, we simply forget… Our lives are so busy and filled with so many responsibilities that we don’t always stop to appreciate and enjoy the little things.

National Smile Power Day is here to remind us, and to encourage us, to make ourselves, and those around us, happier with a smile. Make a conscious decision to smile more during the day, whether it’s when passing someone on the street, when greeting your colleagues or when tipping a car guard or service provider. You’ll be amazed at how great it makes you feel!

A beautiful smile is considered one of the most attractive attributes. It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene habits, not only to preserve the beauty of your smile but also to preserve the health of your teeth and gums. Here’s how to keep your smile looking its best:

Brush twice a day

This is non-negotiable for a healthy and beautiful smile. Brush your teeth twice a day, for two minutes at a time to remove food and plaque.

Choose your toothpaste wisely

While there are plenty of one-size-fits-all toothpaste out there, it’s best to choose a toothpaste specifically formulated to address your concern if you have one.

Sensitive teeth? Biorepair Fast Sensitive Repair Toothpaste (R79.99) not only counteracts plaque formation but seals and protects exposed dentinal tubules thanks to patented microRepair, immediately reducing tooth sensitivity.

Gum issues? Biorepair Gum Protection Toothpaste (R79.99) fights and helps repair gum problems. With an exclusive formula rich in hyaluronic acid, Zinc PCA, microRepair, and natural extracts, this toothpaste provides relief to the oral mucosa, healing and regenerating gum tissue.

Stained teeth? White Glo Instant White Toothpaste (R75.99) contains Blue Foam Optical enhancers that make teeth appear whiter instantly. The Dual Whitening Action in this toothpaste brightens teeth enamel for lasting results.

Use a mouthwash

Mouthwash gives your mouth a clean and fresh feeling, helps keep your breath fresher for longer, and helps reduce the bacteria in your mouth. If bad breath is a concern, use White Glo Charcoal Bad Breath Eliminator Mouthwash (R72.99) daily. It helps whiten teeth and instantly freshens breath. Activated charcoal is highly absorbent and can help remove bacteria, plaque, and germs. If stains are a greater concern, try White Glo Charcoal Deep Stain Remover Mouthwash (R75.99). It not only freshens breath by eliminating the bacteria that cause it but also removes deep stains thanks to the adsorbent properties of activated charcoal.

Floss every day

Yip – every day. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends flossing every single day to remove plaque, bacteria, and food debris from between the teeth. Flossing helps prevent cavities and gum disease and keeps your breath fresh. We recommend flossing at night before bed, to remove the bacteria and debris from the day. Dentek Triple Clean 90 Floss Picks (R94.99) are extra strong and made for scrubbing. Coated in fluoride, they gently remove food and plaque, reducing tooth decay, fighting bad breath, and maintaining gum health.

Don’t forget your tongue!

Tongue scraping is a hot topic on social media right now, and with good reason. We often forget about our tongues when brushing our teeth, but did you know that brushing or scraping your tongue can help prevent tooth decay and periodontal disease, plus it improves your breath? Dentek Oral Brush Tongue Cleaner (R120.00) is specially designed to tackle bad breath-causing bacteria that cover the tongue. Its ultra soft micro-pointed bristles reach deep into a minute and uneven crevices in the tongue that toothbrush bristles are unable to reach into.

Whiten up

Sadly, not everyone is blessed with white, stain-free teeth. Smoking, eating spicy foods like curries, and drinking tea, coffee, or red wine can all contribute to enamel stains. Luckily, there are a variety of safe-and-easy-to-use home whitening products that help remove stains and lighten teeth. White Glo Extreme Whitening Pen with Strips (R280.00) gives you a high-strength bleaching gel in a pen with seven whitening strips to help you safely brighten your smile in just seven treatments. If you like the idea of a whitening powder, try White Glo Activated Charcoal Teeth Whitening Powder (R160.00). This deep stain remover contains mint-flavored activated charcoal, which adsorbs superficial stains left on teeth by food and beverages.

Complementary lip colour

Did you know that certain lip colours make teeth appear whiter? Blue-toned reds, shades of berry and bold fuchsia pinks are considered the best colours for making teeth appear whiter. Colours with orange undertones may have the opposite effect, and are best avoided if your teeth are stained. Try one of these lipstick shades from wet n wild to enhance your pearly whites and complement your smile: MegaLast Matte Lipstick in Stop Light Red or MegaLast High Shine Lipstick in Fire Fighting and Raining Rubies (R99.95).
