The second Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) World Gym for Life Challenge kicks off in Cape Town next week, running from 10 – 14 July 2013.

Enthusiasm and excitement are building up, with the City of Cape Town set to welcome approximately 1 200 gymnasts from over 20 international countries. The largest international contingent will be from Switzerland, comprising over 200 gymnasts.

The City of Cape Town will host a media briefing today, 4 July 2013 during which Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille, will outline the details of the tournament.

Venue: MyCiTi Civic Centre station, Hertzog Boulevard, Cape Town


The programme schedule for the tournament is as follows:

  • 11 and 12 July: Group contest days from 10:00 – 17:00
    Groups compete for bronze, silver and gold positions allocated for their group performance.
  • 11 July: City performances from 13:30 – 16:30
    International and local groups will perform at key city centres, i.e. Golden Acre Centre; Central Train Station; and Civic Centre.
  • 11 July: South African evening at 19:00
    Entertainment will be provided by South African entertainers, gymnasts and the Gym for Life Community Legacy Project members.
  • 12 July: Community show performances from 09:00 – 18:00
    International groups will visit community centres in Cape Town to perform for members of the Community Legacy Project and also provide workshops.
  • 13 July: Workshops (morning session)
    Various workshops will be provided at the Cape Town International Convention Centre for participants and coaches.
  • 13 July: Gala evening at 19:00
    Gold medallists will participate in a gala evening. The World Gym for Life Champion will be crowned by FIG President, Professor Bruno Grandhi.
