SPICE4LIFE’s LIFE Series podcast tells the stories of local citizens working in a variety of fields, highlighting both the ordinary and the celebrity, the typical and atypical careers. Anye Jansen van Rensburg works in a field – law – that many people know about theoretically, but not specifically. How many people can specifically detail what a corporate lawyer actually does on a day-to-day basis?
Jansen van Rensburg is an associate at SchoemanLaw Inc. Attorneys, where she specialises in civil litigation, commercial law, and drafting contracts. The firm focuses on small- to medium-sized enterprises.
So what exactly does working in commercial law entail?
“Mostly, we assist businesses with any requirements they have, from registering a business to setting up a business,” Jansen van Rensburg said. “Registering a company, getting all of your company documents ready, and then helping with employees, setting up contracts and agreements with employees. [We do] everything related to a business, basically.”
Jansen van Rensburg moved with her parents to Cape Town from Gauteng while she was in high school. She attended D.F. Malan High School in Bellville.
She always wanted to be a lawyer, she said, so she attended Stellenbosch University and received her Bachelor of Laws degree in 2006 and Master of Laws degree in 2007.
“It’s something that from a young age interested me,” Jansen van Rensburg said. “I went to study law, not necessarily knowing if I would pursue becoming an attorney but once I started studying I found that it was something that I really enjoyed and I really want[ed] to do. “
Her first experience practising law was as a volunteer student legal advisor in the Stellenbosch Legal Aid Clinic in 2006. There, she assisted attorneys with pro-bono, or free of charge, civil cases.
In 2008, she became a candidate attorney at Heyns and Partners, a law firm with branches in Goodwood, Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Khayelitsha. There, she worked on “general litigation, third party claims, debt collection, [and] drafting of contracts.”
In 2010, she joined Dicks van der Merwe Attorneys, working in motor law, personal injury, contracts and insurance law.
Finally, in July 2014, she made her most recent move to SchoemanLaw as a junior associate. In 2015, she was promoted to associate.
While she’s proud of the promotion and where her career path has taken her, Jansen van Rensburg says that she gets the most joy out of helping clients and connecting with people.
“I love to meet people from all walks of life and assisting them in various ways,” she said. “And making sure they have their foundation right in terms of business so they can have a successful business going forward.”
