Moving into a rented house can feel unwelcoming but there are ways to ensure that it feels like home before too long. We spoke to the advice team at for some ideas:

Change the wall colours. Obviously you’ll need to discuss this with your landlord first, but a coat of paint in a colour of your choice – inside and out – can go a long way to making a house feel like it’s yours. There can be nothing worse than having to live in a terracotta-coloured house when your natural style is crisp white, so start with the basics.

Put away the ugly. From curtains to blinds, cupboards to light fittings – hide away those moveable décor items and finishes that do not match your style. Take the curtains: Simply take down curtains and hide them in the back of the cupboard. Hang up curtains of your choice and the house will be transformed.

Lighting. Lighting is a major game changer in décor and can make a huge difference when setting the tone in your new home. It is possible to store existing light fittings and use your own – you may have to invest in the services of an electrician to do a safe and neat job for you. Also, don’t discount the home-making effect of standing lights in a living area. Invest in some effective and stylish lights and the mood of your home will be lifted immediately.

House plants. We all know a vase of flowers can brighten your day, but try house plants for a certain solution to giving your rental house that feeling of home. From ferns in the bathroom, a herb garden in the kitchen and a succulent display in the living area – house plants are your personal taste stamp on any space in the home. Just remember to use stylish planters and containers in your own décor style to convey a feeling of permanence. There’s nothing quite like a plastic plant container to give that feeling of passing through.

Warm it up. If your rental home is on the chilly side, go one step further than simply wheeling in the faithful gas or oil heater. Invest in one or a few of those stylish table top fires that give off warmth as well as a warm glow of home.

Bring your art. Nothing adds personality to a home like the owners’ choice of art. Whether you like photographic art, canvases or sculpture, don’t be shy to ship in your entire collection. That rental house will instantly turn into your personal space.
