Women around the world have been on the hunt for the perfect pair of jeans since Puerto Rican Luisa Capetillo was sent to jail for wearing trousers in public in 1919 – a pair that not only fits like a dream but slims and accentuates your curves in all the right places. While most of us have yet to lay our hands on a pair of denims that does justice to our shape, the great news is that finding the perfect fit really just a matter of understanding your body type.
The boot cut
This denim style may have fallen out of favour since the arrival of its straight-leg and skinny-cut counterparts, but the slight taper of a good pair of boot-cut jeans is still a curvy girl’s best friend, says Alia.
“The classic mid-rise boot-cut style balances out the silhouettes of full-figured woman whose main concern tends to be leg and hip area,” she says. “It also prevents that dreaded muffin top from spilling over at the waist.”
For taller women with petite frames and straight or boyish figures, the boot-cut can also work for you, as the high waist gives the illusion of a more substantial rear end.
The straight leg
Straight-leg jeans remain a classic denim style and a favourite among the majority of consumers. This style fits easily over the thigh and is cut straight from the knee down, creating a flattering linear appearance that works whether your legs are skinny or slightly more substantial.
However, Alia cautions against opting for a pair that is too baggy around the hips and thighs, as this could make you look bigger than you are. “Focus on keeping the look slim, but not too tight – the straight-cut is meant to look clean and easy-fitting on your body.”
Denim leggings, or ‘jeggings’ as the kids today are calling it, are a great addition to virtually any wardrobe. The elasticity of jeggings and no pockets results in a slimmer silhouette, smoothing and cinching in the bumpy bits while accentuating curves.
Opt for a darker denim wash paired with a long-length top if you’re trying to camouflage a larger tummy area and hips. For linear body shapes with a long and slender figure, Alia suggests layering on a leather jacket over a long-length top to create the illusion of curves.
Many women shy away from skinny jeans as they this style may not be a flattering fit for their body type, but the reality is that skinny jeans can work for most women – even our full-figured sisters. Stretch-material skinny jeans are a great option to fit and flatter an ample bottom half, while the straight skinny cuts work really well for linear figures as they sit just below the navel and create a taller, curvier silhouette.
“You can also pair your stretchy skinny jeans with a long scarf or necklace to draw the eye upwards and away from the hip and leg area,” says Alia. “Lengthier body types can create a chic look with straight leg skinny denims by throwing on a neutral-toned pair of flats or heels to make the legs look longer.”
This is a great cut for smaller frames, as well as those with leaner and thinner silhouettes, as it adds a bit of ‘bulk’ where you need it the most. For shorter women, be sure to choose one with the appropriate fit and style for your form, and avoid cuffed ankles altogether as these tend to make shorter legs look even shorter.
“Wear them rolled for a chic casual look, or unrolled for a longer silhouette. I would also recommend a darker wash if you’re trying to take attention away from big hips. Pair with a cotton t-shirt, a military-style jacket and white lace-up sneakers for a great relaxed weekend look.”
Alia’s bonus tips:
- When in doubt, opt for a stretch-denim fabric as this seems to work for most body types.
- Try on jeans from different brands – there are some brands which cater to specific body types, and it’s worth trying on a few pairs from different clothing names to see which works best for you.
- Don’t forget to look at the ‘rise’ of the jeans. This is not only the key to comfort, but also affects how your waist and tummy area look while wearing it.
