Having thin or fine hair is sometimes considered a blessing by those who have never had it – it’s easy to tie in a ponytail or plait, doesn’t require hours of blow-drying and comes across as pretty low maintenance. But anyone who has fine hair will tell you that it can be trying.

When we refer to hair as “fine,” we’re referring to the actual width of the hair. The wider your hair strands, the thicker your hair. When hair is referred to as “thin” or “thinning,” it generally relates to the amount of hair on the head. People may notice their hair feels a lot thinner after an illness or stressful period in their lives, starting new medication or hormonal changes. There are endless causes of hair loss, which may lead to thinning. Fine hair is something we are born with.

Both thin and fine hair can make it difficult to hold a curl or a wave; it can look limp or flat and often gets greasy very quickly. But all is not lost – managing fine and thin hair is all about finding the right products, and choosing a style that flatters your hair type. Please note the below is just a suggestion and may not work for everyone.

Consider going short

It’s a big step for anyone who’s never worn it, but short hair is a fantastic style to consider for fine hair. The shorter thin or fine hair, the thicker it will look. A low maintenance pixie cut (think Winona Ryder) is a flattering style that’s easy to maintain.

Cut layers

Layers add movement to hair, so those with fine hair may want to consider having their hair cut in layers rather than straight and blunt.

Consider getting highlights

This might sound like a strange solution, but experts suggest that highlights, balayage or baby lights can help fine hair appear thicker. Highlights add texture, and colour made up of different shades creates the illusion of thicker hair due to the way in which the various shades catch the light. Maintaining your highlights with purple hair care products will ensure your colour stays true, and brassiness doesn’t take over.

Try:

Creightons Sunshine Blonde Silver Tone Correcting Shampoo and Conditioner (R105.00) contain violet pigments and UV filters to help correct unwanted brassy tones, brightening your blonde hair.

Provoke Touch of Silver Brightening Shampoo (R120.00) neutralises brassiness and brightens colour in coloured, natural or highlighted platinum, blonde, white, or grey hair with a toning violet pigment. For best results, pair this with Provoke Touch of Silver Intensive Conditioner (R120.00), a rich and luxurious formula that improves hair condition after just one treatment. It contains restorative proteins which intensively target dry, damaged and coloured hair, leaving it feeling smooth and moisturised.

Find the perfect volumizing shampoo and conditioner

Giving fine hair volume starts with a great quality volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Volumizing shampoos can sometimes be a bit drying as they have lightweight formulations, so be sure to look for one that contains added moisturising ingredients. Try HASK Biotin Boost Thickening Shampoo (R179.95) and HASK Biotin Boost Thickening Conditioner (R179.95). This duo contains a plumping complex of biotin, collagen and coffee to give limp, lifeless hair lift and volume.

OGX Thick & Full Biotin & Collagen Conditioner (R196.00) creates fuller looking hair after just one use, giving you thicker, fuller and more textured-looking hair.

Tip: apply conditioner to the lengths and ends of your hair but not to your scalp, as this can make your hair limp and greasy.

Use a clarifying shampoo

When product build-up settles on your hair, it will weigh it down and make it droopy. Avoid this by using a clarifying shampoo every two weeks or so to rid your hair and scalp of impurities. We recommend OGX Purifying + Charcoal Detox Shampoo (R200.00). It gives hair a deep clean detox and leaves it shiny without stripping it of its essential oils. Kaolin clay deeply cleanses and soothes while charcoal traps impurities.

Add texture

Women with fine or thin hair usually run a mile when they see mousse, but modern formulations are a far cry from the crunchy, drying products of bygone years. Today’s formulas are much gentler and hydrating. For volume, apply a volumizing mousse to wet hair, from roots to ends, before blow-drying. Alternatively, a thickening cream can also do the trick.

Try Marc Anthony Dream Big Volume Thickening Cream (R195.00). It has an anti-frizz formula that plumps and smooths to leave your hair looking fuller. Ultra-lightweight microfiber bonding technology works with body-boosting ingredients to create root lift and weightless volume.

Apply products with your hands

A simple but effective trick is to spray your styling aids onto your hands and then apply it with your fingers, rather than spraying it directly onto the hair. When you work the product into your hair with your hands, you’ll get a “rougher” texture, and in turn, more volume. Marc Anthony Grow Long Volumizing Texture Spray (R119.00) can be used to prep the hair for styling, or as a finishing spray for effortless tousled texture with modern matte finish. It’s big on volume and lasting results!

Start using a good dry shampoo

If you have fine hair, dry shampoo is your best friend. Not only does is absorb excess oil synonymous with fine hair, but it also helps give hair volume. You need to look for a formulation that has a lightweight formula – anything else may weigh the hair down. COLAB Dry Shampoo instantly refreshes roots with an incredibly light finish. It leaves no white or powdery residue behind and what’s more, it’s vegan! Try one of the latest variants: Boho Rose or Black Violet (R89.99 each).

Tackle growth

It’s important to note that if you are losing more hair than usual and are concerned about thinning, it’s best to consult your medical practitioner to determine the cause of the hair loss, as the cause will determine the treatment. Once you’ve established that your thin hair is not caused by an underlying medical issue, it’s time to start looking to products that will help increase hair growth. Try Mane ‘n Tail’s Herbal Gro Shampoo (R199.95) and Conditioner (R199.95). Formulated with natural herbs, and blended with an olive oil complex, it strengthens, nourishes and fortifies hair from root to tip, increasing healthy hair growth. Originally developed for use on Arabian horses, Mane ‘n Tail products quickly became the go-to choice for longer, stronger, fuller and easier-to-manage hair.
