Stories have the power to spark imagination, inspire curiosity and shape futures. This belief sat at the heart of The Magical Marble Family Fest 2026 experience, where thousands of families gathered to celebrate storytelling, creativity and shared moments of wonder.
September is Literacy Month in South Africa, with International Literacy Day observed globally on 8 September. Against this backdrop, the initiative offers a timely reminder of the importance of expanding access to books and creating opportunities for more children to discover the joy of reading.
As part of one of the festival’s Legacy pillars, The Magical Marble Family Fest partnered with Exclusive Books and literacy organisation, The Bookery, to turn the magic of stories into meaningful action, successfully collecting and donating over 4,000 books to support literacy initiatives and expand access to reading materials for schools and communities across South Africa.
Activated throughout the festival weekend, attendees were encouraged to arrive with pre-loved books or purchase books at the festival entrance to donate to the initiative. The campaign brought together publishers, businesses, individuals and families around a shared purpose: helping more children gain access to books and develop a lifelong love of reading.
The partnership was a natural extension of the festival itself. The Magical Marble Family Fest was built around imagination and stories, with its main stage designed as an enormous storybook that came alive before audiences’ eyes, complete with a magical castle, fireworks and projection-mapped stories emerging from its pages. Stage performances introduced families to Family Fest characters, immersing audiences in an unfolding story that celebrated family, togetherness and the joy of storytelling.
Grattan Kirk, CEO of Exclusive Books, says: “Reading is one of the most powerful tools we have to unlock opportunity, imagination and learning. Yet for many children in South Africa, access to books remains out of reach. This initiative demonstrates the incredible impact that can be achieved when communities, publishers, organisations and individuals rally behind a common cause. We are deeply grateful to every donor, partner and festival attendee who contributed to this campaign and helped place thousands of books into the hands of children who need them most.”
Choosing literacy as one of the festival’s strongest messages ensured that the storytelling experience extended beyond the stage and into communities where access to books remains limited.
According to national literacy studies, approximately 81% of Grade 4 learners in South Africa cannot read for meaning in any language. Limited access to books remains one of the main barriers to improving literacy outcomes, particularly in underserved communities.
Through this partnership, Exclusive Books, The Magical Marble Family Fest, The Bookery and participating publishers are helping to address this challenge. The collected books will be donated to participating schools, placing quality reading materials directly into the hands of learners and schools that need them most.
Founded in 2010, The Bookery works to ensure that every school has access to a functional library. Beyond providing books, the organisation creates sustainable literacy spaces, trains library assistants and supports schools through ongoing literacy programmes and mentorship.
For The Bookery, the donation will help create new opportunities for schools and learners to engage with reading in meaningful and sustainable ways.
Shelley de Wet, Managing Director of The Bookery, adds: “Every book donated represents an opportunity for a child to discover a new world, strengthen their reading ability and build confidence in their future. Access to books is fundamental to literacy development, and partnerships like this play an important role in helping us create sustainable reading environments in schools and communities. We are incredibly thankful to Exclusive Books, The Magical Marble Family Fest and every contributor who made this generous donation possible.”
Exclusive Books extends its sincere appreciation to Jonathan Ball Publishers, Pan Macmillan, Penguin Random House South Africa, Jan Devet Mayer and every Magical Marble Family Fest attendee who contributed to the collection drive. Their generosity demonstrates the vital role that collaboration plays in tackling one of South Africa’s most pressing educational challenges.
Showcasing how Magical Marble Family Fest Legacy initiatives aim to leave a legacy beyond luxury, the contribution of more than four thousand books to The Bookery’s literacy programmes will help create pathways to learning, imagination and opportunity for children across the country.
During Literacy Month, this contribution also reinforces a simple but important message: giving children access to books is an essential step towards strengthening literacy and opening new possibilities for their futures.
After all, every book has the power to change a story.
