Arguably one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, coach Trevor is determined to give back and reduce the alarming rate of fatal drownings in the country. His constant mission of preventing children from drowning has led to the establishment of swim schools in the heart of Cape Town.
What most locals do not know is that in South Africa, drowning is the 2nd leading cause of accidental death. In SA Approximately 600 children and 200 adults die from drowning each year.
Trevor Ferrier, owner at www.trevorsswimschool.co.za moved his swim school from Pretoria to Cape Town in 2016, and has been teaching kids as well as adults from Philippi and surrounding areas to be safe in and around water.
No child should drown. And yet, according to sea rescue South Africa, 29% of fatal drownings are children under 14 years of age. Drowning is preventable, says Trevor, and his phenomenal team of coaches are committed to being at the forefront of reaching as many people as possible with their swimming programs. These programs are designed for parents who want to teach their children ages 2+ to swim.
“He connects with kids from daycare centres, with school kids, with 5- to 10-year-olds and even with little 2-year-old toddlers. While they are all at different levels, their goal at TSS remains the same: learning a few basic skills can save a life.” – friend.
“I love children,” says Trevor, who started as a voluntary life-saver at the age of twelve. This led to earning his stripes as a professional life-saver on the False Bay coast where he witnessed many drownings. He soon realised that water can be both fun and extremely dangerous, while many children and adults alike seemed ill-prepared for unexpected events. Over the years TSS has evolved into a place where young swimmers learn valuable life lessons along with exceptional swimming techniques through one-on-one sessions with passionate swim coaches. ”One of the most valuable lessons Coach Trevor has taught me is that there is value in changing the life of one swimmer at a time.” – Nathan Pretorius
‘It’s all about trusting them to go further than they believe they can go and learn faster than they believe they can learn. I want children to have confidence in themselves that they can do things that they never thought possible. I also realised that no matter how old someone is, they can still learn to swim.” Both kids and adults embrace that lesson, especially coming from a former Iron Man contestant.
We’ve developed both programs and an environment that’s perfect both for swimmers who don’t know how to swim as well as for those who know how to swim but want to improve their technique.

We have seen unbelievable results with beginners learning to swim in no time at all. The years of expertise working with children from these rural areas in Cape Town has opened our eyes to the daunting realities they’re faced with. I noticed the many dams and still-water in areas like Philippi, Heideveld and the likes, where many young children are left unattended during the day. We believe that being able to swim is an essential life-saving skill. It’s important to remember that children who appear water confident are not always competent swimmers. Learning to swim is a skill that once learnt is rarely forgotten.
But it is not just life-changing, it’s also fun; swimming also provides loads of health benefits which can help to keep your children healthy and happy at the same time.
Trevor and his team provides challenges and rewards accomplishments, which helps children to become self-confident and believe in their abilities.Three alarming seasonal drowning statistics in South Africa:62% deaths in summer13% deaths in spring Young children can drown in 6cm of water in less than a minute!!
