Nationally recognised as Women’s’ Month, August is a period that commemorates the valiant efforts and positive contributions South African women have made and continue to make to society. In order to empower women, raise awareness about Gender-Based Violence and promote safe behaviour on the roads, the Kathu SAPS organised a multidisciplinary women-led road block on the N14 with their key stakeholders.
Dubbed ‘Operation Basadi’ the roadblock was attended by the Mayor of Gamagara Municipality – Cllr Johannes Roman and various law enforcement agencies such as the Traffic Department, Home Affairs and the Department of Correctional Services.
During the operation, the roadworthiness of vehicles was inspected, compliance of motorists was checked and crime prevention awareness pamphlets were distributed to motorists. In addition, rechargeable lights which can also be utilised as power banks, were distributed amongst to compliant women drivers, to promote road safety preparedness.
To support the initiative, Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen Mine through its women employees, participated in the initiative by guiding vehicles through the roadblock and providing refreshments to law enforcement officials.

Being able to partner with law enforcement to raise awareness regarding challenges women experience in society and amplify women empowerment, resonates with our Women in Mining values.
Through ‘Operation Basadi’, the mine was also enabled to engage with women motorist, encouraging them to be safe and alert at all times on the road. We’d like to express our gratitude to the Kathu SAPS for involving us in the operation, especially during Women’s Month. It is only through collaboration with our stakeholders, that we will be able to create a positive impact in the community”
