More than 100 young people gathered at Iziko Museum of South Africa for the inaugural Youth in Colour: Sip & Paint and Silent Disco, a Youth Month celebration that transformed the museum into a vibrant hub of creativity, music and connection.
Designed to bring together contemporary youth culture and heritage spaces, the event combined a guided Sip & Paint experience with an energetic Silent Disco, creating a unique after-hours museum experience that encouraged self-expression, networking and cultural engagement.
Hosted by Siphiwo “Spitch” Nzawumbi, the programme featured a Silent Disco line-up including Mr Thela, DJ Ceerah, DJ Amaze and DJ Kixi, with Nkosinathi Mtshali serving as MC. Guests were able to enjoy a creative painting session before transitioning into an immersive music experience through wireless headphones.
One of the most significant outcomes of the event was the strong interest shown by young people in experiencing arts, culture and entertainment within unconventional spaces. The positive response highlighted the growing demand for alternative social experiences that blend creativity, wellness and meaningful engagement.
The event also demonstrated the potential for museums to serve as dynamic and accessible spaces for younger audiences, attracting participants who may not traditionally engage with museum programming while maintaining the cultural significance of the heritage environment.

Following the success of Youth in Colour, Iziko Museums of South Africa plans to continue exploring innovative youth-focused programming that combines heritage, arts, music and wellbeing, further positioning museums as inclusive spaces for creativity, learning and community connection.
The organisation has also encouraged the public to look out for details of its upcoming Women’s Day 2026 programme, which will feature wellness experiences, a long-table discussion and a concert showcasing some of South Africa’s established artists and performers.
