On Tuesday, 2 June 2026, representatives from Rainbow Chicken visited Breerivier High School in Worcester to hand dignity packs, containing essential hygiene products, to 579 girl learners in Grades 8 to 10.
According to experts from the University of Pretoria, period poverty remains a barrier to education for many girls, affecting attendance, confidence and educational outcomes. In addition, limited access to menstrual health products, sanitation facilities and menstrual health education can negatively impact the overall mental and emotional wellbeing of young women in impoverished communities.
The dignity packs contained essential hygiene products intended to help learners navigate a critical stage of adolescence, including sanitary pads, soap and deodorant.
The initiative formed part of Rainbow Chicken’s commitment to the areas in which it operates and underpinned its belief that young people should have access to the essentials they need to participate fully in school life.
“Something as simple as access to basic hygiene products can make a real difference to a young person’s day-to-day experience at school,” said Allan Hankey, Western Cape, Senior HR Business partner
Many of the learners at Breerivier High School come from the same towns and neighbourhoods in which Rainbow employees live and work.
“As a business with deep roots in the Breede Valley, we recognise the importance of responding to needs identified within our local area. We hope these dignity packs help address a practical need for the learners who received them on the day,” added Allan.
“These young people are at an important stage in their lives, and access to the basics can help alleviate some of the everyday challenges they face so that they are better equipped to focus on their future.
