From October 2025, Capitec, in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs, will allow clients to apply for smart IDs and passports directly at selected branches, bringing vital services closer to millions of South Africans.
Capitec is proud to announce a new collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) that will allow clients to apply for and renew smart ID cards and passports at selected branches from October 2025. Identity documents unlock opportunity, whether you’re applying for a job, travelling for work, or opening a new bank account. Beyond convenience, this initiative is about making a difference by providing simple and accessible services.
The service will initially be available at 10 branches, focusing on areas that are currently underserved by the DHA. The medium-term plan is to expand the offering to 100 branches by early 2026, ensuring a smooth rollout and consistently high service standards.
This partnership aims to make obtaining vital documents faster, safer, and more accessible. By leveraging our advanced security systems and digital capabilities, we’re helping modernise the DHA’s services and create a foundation for greater efficiency in the years ahead. The DHAs’ own recent modernisation efforts mean that Capitec can easily integrate this service into its branches in a way that is compatible with its unique, client-centric focus.
Capitec CEO Graham Lee said, “This partnership is the first proof point of our commitment to work closely with the government and the public sector to solve real problems, remove friction for South Africans, and help our country grow. By combining our technology, branch network, and client-first approach with the Department of Home Affairs’ mandate, we are making essential services faster, simpler, and more accessible for millions from suburbs to rural areas.”
At its core, this collaboration between Capitec and the DHA is about improving the lives of South Africans, driving growth, and unlocking the country’s full potential.
We look forward to sharing further updates as this exciting partnership unfolds.
How it works
- Photo capture: If the DHA does not have a suitable ID photo on file, clients can visit a special smart ID terminal in select Capitec branches.
- Biometric verification: Clients enter their ID number, have their photo taken, and the system verifies their identity against the DHA database in real time.
- Collection: The smart ID will be ready for collection at the same branch within weeks.
- Future expansion: For even greater convenience, functionality through the Capitec app and home delivery will be introduced later. Additionally, passport renewal will be added soon.
