Burton Francis, founder of Francis Wines, has come a long way since his humble beginnings in Paarl. From playing rugby barefoot to exploring the vine-covered slopes of Burgundy, his journey is a testament to determination and dreaming big.
After an injury ended his promising rugby career in France, Burton embraced a new vision. He fell in love with Burgundy wines and the traditional winemaking methods that have been perfected over centuries. This passion led him to pursue an MBA in Wine and Spirits Business at the prestigious Burgundy School of Business.
Burton’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the concept of terroir and the importance of respecting traditional methods. He believes in honouring the unique characteristics of each vineyard site, including the subtle variations in altitude, aspect, and soil. With the guidance of renowned winemaking consultant Kevin Grant, Burton set out to create world-class wines that showcase the unique typicity of the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge appellation. After years of hard work, Francis Wines was launched in 2023 with the release of the 2022 vintages of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
“Francis Wines is an expression of the elegance, balance, and complexity of an old-world wine,” Burton explains. “By respecting and preserving the ‘climats,’ we aim to produce wines that reflect the diversity and richness of our terroir.”
Francis Wines has already received critical acclaim, with industry expert Christian Eedes scoring the Pinot Noir 92 points and the Chardonnay an impressive 95 points.
