This Spring, Nando’s is not only opening up the relationship by bringing you their new plant-based range The Great Pretender™, they are also making the table even bigger with the new exclusive launch of a deliciously thirst quenching and refreshing drink. Introducing Rubro Iced Tea, made from SA’s very own locally sourced Rooibos, the OG of teas. Rubro means ruby-red in Portuguese. Some may say that this exclusive launch is #couplegoals because the African Birds Eye chilli which is the key to Nando’s legendary flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken, and Rooibos, are both sourced from Southern Africa. These two key ingredients are grown under the same sun and share a unique provenance.
Rubro is naturally caffeine free, low in sugar and has no preservatives and colourants. A deliciously Iced Rooibos that will have you SBWL’ for more. Rooibos grows naturally in the Cederberg and surrounding mountains of South Africa. Rooibos is such a boss that it is the first African food to be listed on the Protected Destination of Origin register by the European Union.
The Iced Teas are now available at all Nando’s restaurants countrywide and come in three tasty fruity flavours. Take your pick between the peach, lemon or berry flavour. Rubro pairs well with the Nando’s menu – organoleptic studies show that the flavours pair well with all levels of heat on the PERi-ometer, from Tangy Tomato to Xtra Hot.
Nontobeko Sibiya, Marketing Manager: Communications at Nando’s South Africa had this to say, “We are thrilled to launch this exciting new addition to our menu. As a proudly South African brand, we’re passionate people and deeply invested in the commitment to changing lives, together. Adding Rubro Iced Teas to the Nando’s offering has increased the Rooibos purchasing with the small- scale farmers by 25% and this is something we should all be proud of”.
The colourful design of the Rubro cans is drawn from the colours of the Namaqualand daisies. People travel from all over the world during August and September to see these beautiful wildflowers blooming. The illustration of the Cederberg landscape that is used on RUBRO’s secondary packaging was created by Chloe Townsend. She is the creative force who worked with a linocut for the illustration as she loved the “gestural quality and how it captures the raw beauty of the environment.”
Rubro Drinks Director, Jo Hoets says, “We see this launch as a celebration of the rich heritage of South Africa. Many of us grew up drinking Rooibos – it’s a part of who we are. Our mission is to harness the power of Rooibos to enhance people’s lives; from the people who grow it, to the people who drink it and joining forces with Nando’s to bring our delicious Iced Rooibos to South Africans is a milestone for us. We hope that people who value a quality product filled with natural goodness will feel good about supporting a local brand and the Rooibos farmers who stand to benefit greatly from our partnership.
The weather is warming up, so visit Nando’s to try the new Iced Rooibos with your favourite PERi-PERi chicken and indulge your taste buds.
