Jozi’s Curry Up, part of the We Sell Flavourz Group, ignites a national foodie debate with its boldest dessert fusion yet.
A daring dessert from Jozi-based restaurant Curry Up has captured the country’s attention — and South Africans are eating it up, both literally and figuratively. The Milk Tart Samoosa from Curry Up, a sub-brand of the We Sell Flavourz Group, which has been delighting food lovers across Johannesburg with its diverse culinary offering, has sparked spirited conversation online and divided taste buds.
The viral buzz began with a TikTok video by @kirstyleolashandbrowtech, followed by a Briefly News feature titled “I’m Conflicted – Mzansi Questions Milk Tart Samoosas Woman Bought at Restaurant”. What followed was a flood of comments, memes, and hot takes as South Africans weighed in on the fusion of two local treasures: the creamy comfort of a traditional milk tart and the golden crunch of a samoosa.
“We’re humbled and excited by the reaction,” says Alex Zohany, founder of We Sell Flavourz. “South Africans are passionate about flavour, and this dessert sparks nostalgia while offering something completely new.”
Originally launched as part of an experimental concept in Curry Up’s dessert menu, the Milk Tart Samoosa was designed to surprise and delight — and, as it turns out, to divide the nation’s foodies. What no one expected was that it would become a full-blown online sensation, reaching thousands of food lovers across the country.
“At Curry Up, we love cooking curries for the city that loves to eat them – but we’re also all about pushing flavour boundaries,” Alex shared. “Our Milk Tart Samoosa was born from a simple idea: What if we fused two iconic favourites into one golden, crispy bite? The result was sweet, nostalgic and totally Jozi.”
Why the fuss?
South Africans are famously protective of their traditional dishes, and the unexpected pairing of milk tart and samoosa has ignited both praise and passionate debate. And that’s exactly what Curry Up – and the broader We Sell Flavourz Group – loves to see.
“We’re proud to see our little dessert creating so much conversation,” Alex added. “Whether you love it, hate it, or are still on the fence, we’re just thrilled to see Jozi buzzing over bold new – and dare we say, quirky – flavour ideas.”
