Gold rush fever has taken hold at TOKARA, the prized Stellenbosch family owned wine and olive estate, after a Double Gold and Gold medal strike in the 2020 Michelangelo International Wine Awards.
Taking top honours with Double Gold, is the much lauded TOKARA Reserve Collection Cabernet Sauvignon from the standout 2017 vintage, followed by a Gold medal for TOKARA Chardonnay 2018.
Rated Top 10 by winemag.co.za’s 2020 Prescient Cabernet Sauvignon Report, the 2017 Reserve Collection Cabernet Sauvignon also cracked the nod from UK wine commentator and Master of Wine, Tim Atkin, with a score of 94/100 in his South Africa 2020 Special Wine Report. Atkin, who believes the wine epitomises the underlying finesse of Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, describes the wine as “a textbook expression of the grape, all dried herbs, mint and blackcurrant leaf, with fine tannins, impressive focus and depth and stylish oak.”
For TOKARA winemaker Stuart Botha, the wine is a true expression of TOKARA’s premium vineyard blocks on the slopes of the Simonsberg: “Cabernet Sauvignon is King when it comes to red grapes in Stellenbosch. The marriage between the variety and the Tokara site is where the magic really begins.”
The full-bodied, richly textured Reserve Collection Cabernet Sauvignon is vibrant and bright with classic graphite notes, black cherry, briary fruits and pleasant hints of fresh herbs and red currant interwoven with five spice and cedar wood.
Cabernet Sauvignon is a significant cornerstone of TOKARA and the forward thinking vision of owners GT and Anne-Marie Ferreira, has seen their vineyards consistently produce exceptional, award winning wines over more than 20 vintages.
