A chance meeting in Germany has resulted in a remarkable new wine that brings together two of the world’s most celebrated Sauvignon Blanc regions, South Africa’s Western Cape and New Zealand’s Marlborough.
The new Porcupine Ridge South Island Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc may have been made in New Zealand, but it carries the fingerprints of one of South Africa’s most respected wine producers, creating a bottle that spans nearly 11,000 kilometres and two very different winemaking traditions.
While South Africans and New Zealanders often find themselves fierce rivals on the sporting field, this story is about something far more collaborative. It is a story of shared passion, mutual respect and a grape variety that thrives at opposite ends of the Southern Hemisphere.
The journey began at ProWein, one of the world’s largest wine exhibitions, held annually in Düsseldorf, Germany. Conversations between wine professionals sparked an idea: what would happen if the vibrant, fruit-driven character of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc could be combined with the winemaking philosophy behind one of South Africa’s most popular wine brands?
For Boekenhoutskloof founder Marc Kent, the answer was worth exploring.
Known for creating wines that consistently punch above their weight, Kent travelled to New Zealand’s South Island last year to work alongside a respected family-owned wine business in Marlborough, a region synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc.
Marlborough transformed the global wine landscape during the 1980s and 1990s, its distinctive style bursting with aromas of passionfruit, gooseberry, lime and freshly cut grass becoming instantly recognisable and helping make Sauvignon Blanc one of the world’s favourite white wines.
South Africa’s Sauvignon Blanc tells a different story. From Constantia and Elgin to the Cape South Coast, local examples tend to be more restrained and savoury, often showing citrus, mineral and herbal notes shaped by cool ocean influences.
The new wine celebrates both traditions while remaining unmistakably Marlborough in style.
On the nose, it offers intense aromas of gooseberry, tropical fruit and fresh herbs. The palate delivers layers of passionfruit, kiwi, lime and citrus, supported by bright natural acidity and a crisp finish that makes it an ideal companion for seafood, summer salads or simply a warm afternoon with friends.
For wine lovers, the release offers an opportunity to experience one of the world’s great wine regions through the lens of a familiar South African label.
For travellers, it is a reminder of the connections that increasingly link the Southern Hemisphere’s wine destinations. Both the Cape Winelands and Marlborough are defined by dramatic landscapes, maritime climates and a deep commitment to producing wines that reflect their surroundings.
Industry observers have praised the project for bringing together the strengths of two globally respected wine-producing nations.
More broadly, the wine represents a growing trend in which winemakers are looking beyond borders to share expertise, explore new regions and create products that appeal to increasingly adventurous consumers.
The result is a wine with an unusual passport. It is New Zealand in origin, South African in inspiration and international in outlook.
Most importantly, it offers wine drinkers something increasingly rare: a genuine story behind the label.
In an age when many products claim to be global, this Sauvignon Blanc truly is, bringing together two countries, two wine cultures and two extraordinary landscapes in a single bottle.
