When I lost my health in my forties, I also lost my mobility and abilities. Worst was losing the joy of speaking to audiences of smiling female faces. Like the song says: “Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.”
Autoimmune disease is known as an Invisible Disease, and that is how I came to see myself: invisible. As my body and life shrank, so did my self-concept. I stopped identifying as a dynamic leader and saw myself as a sick elder struggling to survive.
I was 51.
But in a wondrous plot twist, I was led to an odyssey of radical self-healing! Within 3 years I had healed my body, reclaimed my mind and revitalized my spirit. But there was still work to do! Now I needed to heal my self-image. If I was no longer Diva, Loser, or Invalid, who was I? If you are itching to reveal your authentic self, let me show you how I found me again.
Use one, two or all; this is your unique process, make it your own! Make it as simple or elaborate as you choose. Also, take your time… no rush, just dedication.
How To Re-Boot Your Self-Concept
- Collect Your Confidence Catalysts
Trawl through your albums and socials. Curate pics that make you feel good – even if old, they are still all YOU.
- Search Your Mind Palace for Confident Memories
Remember back, and make note when your:
- Body felt/looked fabulous
- Make-up made you feel like a queen
- Hairstyle flattered you perfectly
- Outfit made you feel amazing
- Now Hype Yourself…
Write lists of:
- “Goals I have met”
- “Habits I have stuck to”
- “Help I have given to others or animals”
- Fire It Up with Feedback
Start a Success list – and keep adding to it!
- Compliments and praise
- Certificates or awards
- Testimonials from mentors / clients / teachers / LinkedIn recommendations
- Invite Inspiration
Curate images and words that light you up:
- Artists / celebrities / leaders
- Quotes / lyrics
- Movies / books / shows
- Create Your Intentions Image!
And now put it all together and breathe life into it
- Digital: use Canva to create phone wallpaper or collage
- Offline: print images, and create a simple sheet or an entire scrapbook!
- Save it to your phone / computer
- Or print it and place where you’ll see it often
- Look at it morning + night
Now you have a vivid, confident picture for goal-setting. Remember, it’s not about that exact picture but how it makes you feel. Does it excite you and motivate you? Then it was a success! And remember, this work is never finished – we are all an art-work in progress.
