By Christo Hattingh, Executive Head Chef, Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate
The winter months in the Western Cape remind me of my time working in the kitchens of Scotland and Germany. In those regions, winter dining centres on warmth, comfort, and bold flavours that cut through the cold. On Sunday, 19 July 2026, I am bringing that European festive spirit to the Moody Lagoon Restaurant for our Christmas in July celebration.
At Benguela Cove, we focus on a farm-to-table philosophy. My team and I source ingredients from our own kitchen gardens and local producers to ensure every dish tells a story of the Overberg region. For this mid-winter feast, we have designed a menu that honours South African heritage while applying the contemporary techniques I developed during my international career.
The Christmas in July Menu
We begin the afternoon with a traditional welcome drink of warm mulled wine. To start, we serve a milkbun wreath accompanied by a selection of flavoured butters. For the main course, guests choose between two festive staples:
· Gammon basted with BBQ and pineapple.
· Chicken served with traditional stuffing.
We accompany these with roasted baby potatoes and a cumin and coriander carrot mash. A traditional potato salad completes the harvest-style spread. To finish, we offer “Canape Style” desserts: cream puffs filled with cinnamon mousse and our signature Benguela Christmas Pudding served with whipped cream.
Every element of this menu complements our estate’s cool-climate, maritime wines. Whether you prefer a crisp Sauvignon Blanc or a robust Syrah, our cellar team assists with pairings that elevate the dining experience.
Why Winter at Benguela Cove?
Benguela Cove sits on the edge of the Bot River Lagoon. During July, the landscape transforms. The mist over the water and the greenery of the Kogelberg Biosphere create a unique backdrop for a long Sunday lunch. Our restaurant provides a weather-proof sanctuary where you can enjoy panoramic views while remaining shielded from the winter elements.
