Travelling doesn’t have to be associated with nausea, and although it is a misconception that feeling nauseated can only occur while travelling long distances, this discomfort can pop up at any time, and through any movement. Being moved around in a car, aeroplane, boat or even an amusement park ride can bring about nausea. Even movement on a screen such as a TV or tablet can cause discomfort.
Nausea through movement is estimated to affect one in three people and occurs when your brain receives signals from your motion-sensing parts of the body such as your eyes, inner ears, muscle and joints. However, when these parts send conflicting information, your brain doesn’t know if your body is moving or if it is stationary. The confused reaction from your brain is what makes you feel sick.
Symptoms of discomfort caused by motion include:
- Cold sweats.
- Dizziness.
- Fatigue.
- Headache.
- Irritability.
- Inability to concentrate.
- Increased saliva, nausea and vomiting.
- Pale skin.
- Rapid breathing or gulping for air.
“Feeling nauseated is not a pleasant occurrence, however being able to avoid it while travelling is sometimes not an option as being in any form of transportation is often necessary,” explains Carla Yssel, brand manager of vom-eeze from Tibb Health Sciences. “However, if you are susceptible to feeling this discomfort, it is important to know how to lessen these symptoms, providing relief.”
Yssel suggests the following ways in which to help curb feeling nauseated:
- Dehydration can cause motion sickness and therefore keeping bottles of water available can help to calm the nausea.
- Have complementary medicine on hand to help settle your nausea. vom-eeze contains ingredients that helps with the management of nausea and vomiting and restores balance within the digestive system. vom-eeze is available in a great tasting 100ml syrup and is suitable for children from the age of six to adults.
- Studies have shown that slow, deep breaths help to lower the feeling of nausea and the chances of vomiting. Simply calm yourself and start to breath.
- Look straight ahead into the distance at the horizon as this gives your body the chance to steady itself.
- Dabble in some acupressure. Wearing wrist bands with plastic bumps, or by simply pressing on your wrist helps to convince your brain that you are not going to get sick. To find the right spot position your hand so that your fingers are pointing up and your palm is facing you. Place your first three fingers of your opposite hand across your wrist, and then place your thumb on the inside of your wrist just below your index finger. You will feel two large tendons under your thumb. Use your thumb to press on this point for two to three minutes while moving in a circular motion and applying pressure.
- Limit all electronics. Cyber sickness is described as nausea due to the movement on the screen. When used while traveling the movement of the car, plane or boat this confuses the brain even more.

“Feeling nauseated can occur when you least expect it. vom-eeze can help to calm your symptoms and allow you to continue with your day ahead nausea free,” comments Yssel.
