Modern air conditioners offer a compelling alternative to traditional gas heaters.
As temperatures drop and energy bills rise, households explore affordable ways to stay cosy indoors. While traditional gas heaters have long been a staple, a new heating alternative is gaining momentum – residential air conditioning units. Modern air conditioners can provide efficient and cost-effective heating, making them a smart choice for sustainable living, says Kichang Jung, Air Solutions Product Director at LG Electronics South Africa.
“Many consumers overlook the fact that air conditioners are dual-purpose appliances,” explains Jung. “They not only cool during the summer but can also heat your home in winter through a process called heat extraction.” Unlike gas heaters that rely on combustion, air conditioners work by transferring heat from the outside air into your living space, even when temperatures are chilly.
This heat extraction method is significantly more energy-efficient than burning natural gas or paraffin. “By avoiding combustion, you eliminate heat loss and wasted energy, which translates into substantial savings on your utility bills.” She cites internal research conducted by LG Electronics Air Solutions team, showing remarkable cost savings of up to 57% in Cape Town and an impressive 65% in Johannesburg when using a modern air conditioner versus a traditional gas heater for heating needs. This study was conducted in May 2024 on an LCC simulator.
Beyond the financial benefits, Jung notes air conditioners offer additional advantages for homeowners seeking warmth during winter. “Many contemporary units now feature zoned heating capabilities, allowing you to warm specific areas or rooms as needed instead of unnecessarily heating the entire house.” This targeted approach further reduces energy waste while providing personalised comfort tailored to individual preferences and needs.
Air conditioners have a reduced environmental impact compared to gas heaters. Gas heaters typically use non-renewable energy sources like natural gas, propane, or LPG to generate heat, making them less eco-friendly.
“Recent advancements in air conditioning technology, especially by top brands like LG, incorporate cutting-edge innovations to minimise their carbon footprint and align with sustainable living goals.” By harnessing the principles of heat extraction rather than combustion, air conditioners contribute to a greener future while keeping homes warm and comfortable.
Despite the higher initial cost of buying an air conditioner versus a gas heater, homeowners can save money in the long run. “By using air conditioners correctly, you can cut down on how often you need to maintain them, which means you spend less on upkeep and repairs. Plus, their energy-efficient design helps you save a lot over time, making up for the initial cost in just a few years.”
As nights become colder and households brace for the accompanying spike in energy bills, Jung encourages homeowners to explore LG’s residential air conditioning as a smart and sustainable heating solution. “With their remarkable energy savings, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendly design, modern air conditioners offer a compelling alternative to traditional gas heaters. By making the switch, you can keep your home warm and comfortable while simultaneously reducing your environmental footprint and energy expenses.”
However, it’s important to consult with a reputable HVAC professional to determine the most suitable air conditioning system for your specific heating needs and local climate conditions. “While air conditioners are an excellent heating option, proper sizing and installation are crucial to maximising their efficiency and ensuring optimal performance throughout winter,” Jung concludes.
