On Sunday 11 October, South Africans across the country will celebrate their unique green spaces and gardens in every shape and size as Garden Day marks the beginning of Spring for the most meaningful Garden Day yet.
Created by gardening app Candide, Garden Day is a growing movement uniting people in their love for plants and flowers since 2016. From keepers of rolling lawns, community gardens, and vegetable patches to potted window sills, patio planters, and urban rooftops, the annual celebration is calling on plant lovers to put on a flower crown, down tools, and enjoy the fruits of their labour.
#MyGardenMoves
Garden Day has always been a movement, and right now it’s all about moving your body with #mygardenmoves, a TikTok dance challenge that’s attracted some very big names. First YouTube sensation SuzelleDIY got in on the act, rocking out next to her plants as she urged them to “Grow darlings. Grow!” And then, before you we knew it, funny man Schalk Bezuidenhout was dressed in a one-piece leotard and floral wreath, cutting some serious shapes with his watering can. Chef Siba Mtongana couldn’t resist, and joined the dance off in a farm-style video, complete with starburst graphics and crowing roosters. The jury’s still out on who danced it best, but the main thing is that they got involved. As did many others…
Nadia Jaftha went all-out bohemian, Liezel van der Westhuizen decided to be bright and colourful, and teams from Stodels, Kirstenbosch Gardens and Babylonstoren all got in on the act. And with the weather warming, dancers have been submitting videos from all corners of the country, donning flower crowns and waving forks, rakes and spades as they shake, shuffle and shimmy. It’s happening in back yards, open fields, courtyards, garden shops and beaches, all against a diverse, blossoming backdrop that showcases just how refreshing South Africa is in springtime.
So why not join in? Grab your gumboots, put on your dancing shoes, maybe do a few stretches and find a good spot in your garden. Then, all you need to do is listen to the music, learn the moves and record yourself. Upload your video to TikTok using #mygardenmoves and tag @gardendaysa. In addition to getting the blood flowing and having some proper fun, you stand a chance to win your share of R10 000. So get going now…let your inner dancer out!
The #mygardenmoves challenge is another heart-warming reminder of how we’ve managed to stay connected during these very difficult months. In keeping with this sprit, Garden Day is hosting a virtual get-together on Sunday the 11th of October, connecting friends, families and neighbours all over the country. It’s free to login into via Facebook Live or Zoom, and it’s the perfect opportunity for you to show everyone your truly awesome dance moves.
