It’s been three days of cosplay, geek community and expression at the 2024 Comic Con Cape Town festival happening at the CTICC 2.
On the gaming floor, Kaylan Moodley won the Telkom Conquest Cup: Showdown on FC24 and Telkom’s gaming hub was also also buzzing with eDiski Season 7 Finals, Heroes of the Pitch: High School Esports League Challenge, and the “Are You Game?” Mobile Challenge.
Over the weekend the crowds were treated to a spectacular surprise stunt that saw DeVille Vannik get thrown over the third-floor balcony into a cushion of boxes after a staged fight scene.
Two themed days of fun
Comic Con Cape Town is now into two themed days that start later (11am) and end later (8pm) to allow for visitors to come after school and work, or enjoy the leave they took between the weekend and public holiday. The programme returns to a 9am-6pm for the final day on the public holiday Wednesday 1 May.
On Monday 29 April, Comic Con got creepy with a horror theme and plenty of horror events including the Just Doodle It horror game show, a ghoulish casual cosplay parade, workshops and lectures including How To Write Horror, a Horror Cosplay Tutorial, a Horror Movie Make-up Battle, and a Horror Movie screening of Fried Barry.
What to Expect on Tuesday 30 April
On Tuesday 20 April, it’s the Pyjama edition of Comic Con, with visitors encouraged to dress in their pyjamas. But there are also plenty of activities and talks for collectors and content creators.
Experienced legal expert Eitan Stern will be giving a talk on navigating the legal landscape of the creative media industry. In another talk, Gavin Towsen and Dolan Kemp will share the key things to watch out for to avoid being scammed when buying comic.
Clinton Smith (CEO, Cosmesis), Marco Raposo de Barbosa (VFX Supervisor, Continuum Pictures), and Gerald Sutherland Clark (Cosmetics and Prosthetics) will be talking about crafting Cinematic Worlds on TV and in the movies through the Art of VFX, Props and Prosthetics.
Experienced cosplayers Jessica Logie (affectionately known as Yamaki), Caitlin Mittelmeyer, Wesley-Jade Wyngaard, and Sean Robinson will be sharing their tips about creative cosplay and renowned comic book artist Bill Masuku discusses his creative process and inspirations behind his acclaimed work.
There are also lots of games throughout the day, starting in the late morning with the family edition of Game Show: What’s in the Box and a Lego Speed Build. In the afternoon there’s a game show, Whose Script is This Anyway?
Enjoy a screening of The Best of Cape Town International Animation Festival 2023 with an African Film Selection showcasing films from across South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria.
Join in on an hour of musical madness and sing your heart out to all your favourite tunes while rocking your comfiest pyjamas in Comic Con’s Pyjama Karaoke session! The evening ends with a Disco Pyjama Party with DJ Elliot featuring iconic gaming tracks from franchises like Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Halo, Pokémon, and more. From 8-bit masterpieces to sweeping orchestral scores, we’ll cover an awesome range of gaming
music new and old.
