Activities to up your fitness game
The sun is starting to appear and that means a world of outdoor fun awaits at the V&A. We’ve put together a list of activities that are guaranteed to keep you moving and in great shape for summer.
Stand Up Paddling
Enjoy the outdoors and the calm waters by paddling along the canal in our neighbourhood with SUP Cape Town. Pop by their store at Battery Park to hire a board. New to the sport? The SUP team also offers visitors the option to book an instructor to teach them the art of stand-up paddling.
Africa Padel Court
A new sport has just launched at the V&A – Africa Padel. Padel as is popularly known, is a hybrid between tennis and squash and is currently the world’s fastest-growing sport played by millions across the world. Come join in the fun and swing your hand for a game. The courts are located on Portswood road, next to Deloitte’s new offices, off Helen Suzman Drive.
Basketball at Battery Park
Unleash your inner Michael Jordan and amp up your fitness with a game basketball with friends over at Battery Park. The court has adjustable hoops which makes it accessible for younger players too. Feel free to walk about the park and enjoy restaurants, retail stores and water activities.
Kayak into the Horizon
Explore the ocean with the Atlantic Outlook’s kayaking experience, the ultimate summer activity that is not only fun but also provides a great workout. Take in the beauty of Table Mountain, Lions Head and the Atlantic Sea Board coastline from the comfort of a kayak. You may also spot a few dolphins and seals. The trip is two hours and starts from the V&A Waterfront, past the Sea Point lighthouse, and back the same route.
Grab A Bike and Go
There is so much to see and do in the V&A neighbourhood and one of the best ways to explore the property is with a bicycle ride from Up Cycles, all while working up a sweat. Up Cycles is the city’s only drop-and-go bicycle rental company.
Visitors can look forward to cruiser-style Dutch bicycle (helmets and locks included) for all ages and sizes, and you can rent one for as little as an hour, or as much as a day from early morning to sunset – whatever suits you. Explore the Waterfront, the Sea Point Promenade, the Green Point Park and Stadium Precinct, or the city itself from the vantage point of a bicycle – a unique experience indeed.
Running the Scenic Route
Keep fit while taking in the scenery at the V&A Waterfront’s running route. The 2.2km route is marked in yellow while the 5km run is marked in red, and both are clearly signposted making it easy for runners to track their distance. Free maps of the route are available from the Tourist Information Centre.
Both routes start at the Information Centre and snake past many well-known V&A Waterfront landmarks including the Aquarium, the One & Only Hotel and the Cape Grace Hotel before winding its way over the Swing Bridge, past the Victoria & Alfred Hotel, the Cape Wheel and the Amphitheatre to The Table Bay hotel.
From there the route reaches the Breakwater and its scenic Boardwalk Path. Various scenic lookout points offer runners and walkers alike an opportunity to soak up the beauty of the Atlantic Ocean, and possibly even spot a frolicking seal or a pod of dolphins. Runners then make their way to Granger Bay where the Cape Town Stadium will come into view, before finally heading back to the Information Centre.
