ACK TO BLACK OFFERS A RARE GLIMPSE INTO AMY WINEHOUSE’S EARLY RISE TO FAME
Watch the biopic on the big screen at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas from 12 April
“I want people to hear my voice, and just forget their troubles for five minutes…” – Amy Winehouse
The release of the movie, BACK TO BLACK, gives cinema audiences a never-before-seen glimpse into Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking studio album, Back to Black. The biopic releases at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas on Friday, 12 April.
The film will also be releasing in Ster-Kinekor’s luxurious Cine Prestige cinemas, including Cradlestone, Cresta and Mall of Africa in Johannesburg, Gateway in Durban, Baywest in Gqeberha, and at Cavendish in Cape Town. The reclining red leather seats and delicious snacks and drinks delivered to your cinema seat add to a really special movie experience to watch a special movie with your special people.
The film is a celebration of the most iconic – and much missed – homegrown star of the 21st century… the extraordinary tale of Amy Winehouse. Painting a vivid and vibrant picture of the Camden streets of London she called home and capturing the struggles of global fame, BACK TO BLACK honours Amy’s artistry, wit, and honesty, while at the same time trying to understand her demons. It presents an unflinching look at the modern celebrity machine and is a powerful tribute to a once-in-a-generation talent.
Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and written by Matt Greenhalgh, the film stars Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse, together with Eddie Marsan as Amy’s father, Mich Winehouse, and Jack O’Connell who portrays her then boyfriend (and later ex-husband), Blake Fielder-Civil.
BACK TO BLACK follows Amy’s journey from confident north London teenager to international megastar. In her short life, she became a music legend, but her troubled personal life was often under intense scrutiny in the press. Her on-off relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil and her alcohol and drug addictions made for sensationalised headlines in the tabloid press, all the while being pursued by paparazzi photographers when she was at her most vulnerable.
“There is no greater love than the love people have for Amy whose music has touched their souls and provoked their hearts into feeling that she is theirs and theirs alone. A small bird of a woman with the power of a lioness and a voice that transcends our time. Bringing Amy’s story to life is a privilege, to have the space to soak in her music, know her heart and to bring it all to the big screen is a gift I’m excited to pass along into the world,” commented director Sam Taylor-Johnson.
