(remember it’s as unique as your fingerprint, one size does not fit all)
The beauty and skincare sector over the last few years has seen a rise in ineffective, counterproductive, and even dangerous information. From instant Google “experts”, Tiktok skincare advice and influencers sharing their regimens and DIY hacks, there is an urgent need to apply evidence-based approaches to caring for the largest organ in the body, our skin.
Dr Judey Pretorius, Biomedical Scientist and Founder of Biomedical Emporium, is the real deal: she has a Masters degree in Genetics and Molecular Biology and a Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Drug and Development Design. Dr Judey says the time is now to share accurate information allowing consumers to make informed decisions.
Critical to making informed decisions is a deeper understanding around what really matters when it comes to skincare (less fluff, more fact). Dr Judey has identified the following:
Cellular Current
Dr Judey will tell you that if an electrical charge is absent, if the purity of a product’s inactive ingredients are questionable, and if it’s mass produced for any number of skin types, you aren’t going to get the desired result.
Cellular current and an electrical charge associated with each molecule which will determine whether a product is going to penetrate your skin, or not. “The ingredients in a product should be of such a high concentration,” she says, “so when you apply it to your skin, it immediately penetrates.”
Purity matters
Another tip to look for when determining active ingredients is purity of the active ingredients. “If you look at the writing on a label and the ingredient list starts with “aqua”, my question is whatwater is going into the product? Potable water or are your filtrating it to get ionized water? Are you oxygenating it, or is it WFI (water for injection) – in its purest form?” Be on the lookout for the name of the formulator on the label for credibility purposes.
Pretorius says she only uses pharmaceutical grade raw materials and ingredients at her facility, “I use a diamond analogy,” she says. “Cut, clarity and colour. I’m a jeweller when it comes to ingredients in our products.” She’s staked her reputation on her fierce standards and complies with European, Canadian, US and Australian legislation.
Harmony and equilibrium
Ultimately your skincare regime should create a favourable environment to bring your skin back into equilibrium and state of homeostasis. “Products should go beyond just the cosmetic because your skin is as unique as your fingerprint and deserves a solution as unique as you are,” she says. Depending on your individual concerns, pigmentation, acne prone and oily skin, anti-aging, dehydrated and sensitive skin, you should find a product that addresses your specific skin needs.
Dr Judey recommends a combination of both home care products and professional treatments to ensure a suitable remedy for individual skin. “Everyone’s skin is different, so the most important thing you can do is consult a certified professional to develop a science-backed treatment plan based on your skin’s particular needs,” she says.
“At Biomedical Emporium, we provide products for all skin types and all skin concerns, our science is based on the love of your skin,” Pretorius says.
