In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in work, school, household responsibilities, and the endless to-do lists that seem to grow by the day. Between meetings, homework, chores, and screen time, genuine moments of connection can often take a back seat.
That’s why receiving a LEGO Play Kit from LEGO South Africa couldn’t have come at a better time. It was more than just a box filled with colourful bricks—it was an invitation to pause, reconnect, and rediscover the joy of play with the people who matter most.
More Than Just Building Bricks
Inside the LEGO Play Kit was everything needed to spark creativity and laughter: a LEGO Classic Set, play challenge cards, memory cards, and a booklet highlighting the importance of play.
One message stood out immediately:
Start with play.
It’s such a simple idea, yet one we often forget. We tend to fit play into the little time that’s left after everything else is done. But what if we did the opposite? What if we made time for play first, knowing that those shared moments create memories that last far longer than another completed chore?
Building Memories Together
As a family, we’ve always enjoyed activities that bring us together, and LEGO did exactly that.
There was no pressure to build something perfect. Instead, everyone brought their own ideas to the table. Some wanted to build imaginative creations, others enjoyed following patterns, while a few simply enjoyed experimenting to see what they could create.
What surprised me most wasn’t what we built—it was the conversations that naturally happened while we were building.
There was laughter over unusual creations, friendly debates about whose idea was the best, and plenty of teamwork as we helped each other solve little building challenges. Before we knew it, we had spent hours together without anyone reaching for their phones.
The Power of Play Doesn’t End with Children
One of the biggest misconceptions is that LEGO is only for kids.
The reality is that adults benefit from play just as much.
Play encourages creativity, reduces stress, strengthens relationships, improves communication, and gives us permission to simply enjoy the moment. Whether you’re building with your children, siblings, parents, friends, or even colleagues, LEGO creates opportunities to connect in ways that everyday life often doesn’t.
It reminds us that we don’t always need a special occasion to make memories.
Sometimes all we need is a handful of colourful bricks and a little imagination.
Why Play Matters
Research shared by LEGO highlights just how valuable play is for families. It encourages problem-solving, creativity, communication, and emotional connection. In fact, many parents say they feel they get to know their children better through play.
What I appreciated most about the booklet included in the Play Kit was its reminder that the greatest creation isn’t necessarily what you build—it’s the time you spend together.
That couldn’t be more true.
Our Favourite Part
While every challenge was fun, our favourite moments were the unexpected ones—the bursts of laughter when someone’s masterpiece looked nothing like they intended, the excitement of seeing everyone’s creativity come to life, and the friendly competition that kept us smiling throughout.
It wasn’t about winning.
It was about being together.
A Simple Reminder
World Play Day serves as a wonderful reminder that play isn’t a luxury—it’s an important part of healthy relationships and family life.
Life will always be busy. The dishes will still be there. The emails can wait. But the opportunity to spend quality time with the people we love is something we should never take for granted.
Thank you to LEGO South Africa for the thoughtful Play Kit and for reminding us that sometimes the simplest activities create the biggest smiles.
So, whether you’re building castles, spaceships, animals, or something completely unique, don’t worry about making it perfect.
Just start playing.
Because the best memories are often built one brick at a time.
